June 11, 2007 ~ Part 2
Jun 10, 2007
Well I am getting so much information about the surgery these days and feel so ready to pursue it…much more confident about it then I was even a week ago. I have read all sorts of information online. Today I even got a call from a wonderful person at Kaiser who was such a wealth of information. She is one of the people that works with the Barriatric support group.
While she had me on the phone she went through what the surgery was…the OPEN RNY is the only one Kaiser does…(I have to say that put me off a little…more because I hate epidurals.) She also went over the recommendations that the Dr. will most likely have me accomplish before being accepted for the surgery.
Before I can have the RNY I will have to take a 5wk Nutrition course. I will need to most likely be placed on medication for my blood pressure and maybe diabetes (according to the records she was able to pull up). I will need to be exercising daily even if it is just a walk around the block. I will need to know what exactly my insurance coverage will cost me / cover (One item down!! Cost/cover $250.00 deductible and surgery is covered under my Inpatient Benefit).
The women I spoke with also said the process from start to surgery date will take about 1 year. She told me about the Bariatric Support group which has monthly meetings and said that I should start going to those and she encouraged me to contact mental health since she said this surgery helps you heal your body but not your mind…huh that was so strange to hear as I cannot think of any reason I overeat??? I just like food and have no will power. In fact the other evening I was eating cookies and watching a movie by the time the show was over I looked down and noticed I had eaten 3 of the 5 rows of cookies. I am so bad!!!
June 10, 2007 ~ Looking back
Jun 09, 2007
I was looking at FitDay.com and thought it looked fimiliar!! I decided to use an old screen name I used to use all the time pre baby #3. Low and behold there was a Journal entry I had made June 7, 2005 (I must always think about weight loss this time of year?)
Here was what I wrote.... (Apparently I was just going to start one of my many get in shape and loose weight kicks...thought I never went back to the site.)
"June 7, 2005 Okay well today is a new day and I have decided to start a new exercise plan!
I would like to be down to my ideal weight by my 29th birthday ~ March 23, 2007.
My goal is to do this so that by the time my daughter goes to school she will not have to be embarresed by a fat slob looking mom. I want to do it so that I can fit in the cute & trendy clothes that I like as well as just be able to be the person I really am...not the one looking at me in the mirror. I want to be the person I really think is under all of the flab. And I want to start my 30's on the healthy side!!
I plan to accomplish this goal with my hubby. My husband and I have decided to start this plan over again as the last time was a bust. Not too long after starting the last weight loss plan I got pregnant and any weight I had lost all came flooding back on. Our son is now 8 months and there are no excuses for not being in the gym!"
Huh now nothing ever came of that I went from approx 278-258 and then obviously over the 2 years have gained al that back and then some. I am 313 which is more then I weighed the day I had my third child who is now over a year old!!!
June 7, 2007 ~ So the Journey Begins!
Jun 06, 2007
Today I called my insurance company / HMO to find out if my policy covered Barriatric Surgery and in fact it does. My policy will only cover the Divided Roux En Y Procedure. I will need to come up with the co-pay and before anything I need a referral from my physician. So the Jumping begins….
I asked about the qualification requirements but the insurance biller did not know and told me I would need to call the nurse advice line. Called the nurse and well…she did not know. At first she said I would have to ask the Dr. but after telling her I wanted to see if it was even worth making the appointment she looked up the requirements for me. The requirements were very vague! Basically it was like 2 pages of chit chat and only said you have to have a BMI over 40 and meet the Dr.'s requirements :) lol huh?? The nurse is mailing me the letter. The nurse was nice enough to leave a message for the actual Barriatric support group Dr. maybe he/she will be able to answer my question? huh wonder if they will call me?
Anyway I want ahead and made an appointment with a Dr. for the 15th to discuss my weight issues (as the nurse called it) :) Wish me luck all!
And if you have ANY advice let me know
Here is the procedure it covers ~ Open Divided RNY surgery The Fobi procedure?
Fobi Pouch (Restrictive with Malabsorption)
The Fobi procedure (Divided RNY) creates an approximately 1 oz. vertically-oriented, banded pouch, completely cut away from the remaining stomach and connected to the small intestine in a Roux-n-y fashion with a jejunal interposition.
A vertically-oriented pouch is much less prone to stretching than the conventional horizontally-oriented pouch. The band at the outlet of the pouch enforces a small fixed outlet, slowing the time it takes for food to pass through the pouch and, therefore, the amount of food that can be comfortably eaten in a day. Cutting the pouch completely away from the rest of the stomach and interposing small intestine (jejunum) between the cut edges minimizes the chance of the stomach growing back together and reversing the bypass. Fobi Pouch can be done Proximal, medial and distal depending on the beginning weight patient..Discuss this with your surgeon.
The Fobi Pouch Gastric Bypass is characterized by:
• A Small 1 oz Stomach Pouch 1 to 1.5 oz when mature.
• A Small Controlled, Non-Stretchable Outlet
• An Acceptably Low Complication Rate
• Satisfactory Weight Loss 70% most 100%
• Absence of Excessive Late Failures . Total regain of weight — which can occur in a substantial percentage of patients undergoing vertical banded gastroplasty or classic gastric bypass — is very uncommon with the Fobi pouch procedure
