Height 5'8" Highest weight 315. PreOp 298.

August 2005

I'm 56 years old, love to canoe, camp, ski, snowboard. I'm just tired of fighting the weight loss yo yo.

I have been to the first meeting, and have had my talk with the dietician. I have my psych evaluation set up for the 21 of Sept. I am hoping to have the surgery in late Nov, early Dec.

I am 5' 8" tall, 280 lbs, I know I am a lightweight compared to some. I have been overweight pretty much since I quit drinking (Dec 7, 1979). I have been over 310 lbs, I've probably lost over 500 lbs altogether in yo yo diets. You guys know, loss 50 gain 60 etc.

My wife had RNY surgery 2 1/2 years ago, I do know a little of what I'm getting myself into. I've seen her go through all the leary feelings, some depression.

My goal is to improve my breathing, of which I also have asthma.
Improve my stamina, I don't know about marathon running, but would like to at least do 4 miles like I used to.

Weight wise, I'd like to see 190-200 again. I looked really good back then.
I will post more when I get closer to approval.
I might even get a fat picture up here!!!

Today's date November 17, 2005

I have finished my MPPI, and Phsyc report has been sent to the surgeons office. I have taken a TSH blood workup and had that faxed to Dr. Shapiros office also.
The first letter has been sent to the insurance company. It will probably be 2 to 4 weeks. I'm hoping for 2.
I'm starting to have some leary feelings. I know what I'm doing is the best thing I can do. I know I have to get the weight off.
to remain healthy and live longer.
I will update again when I have met with the surgeon and have a date set.

Mid December 2005.

We finally have word from our surgeons office. My insurance co. has denied the claim for surgery for now. They have added to their requirements that I follow a 6 month, medically supervised diet and exercise plan. I have already initiated that and have set my appointments with the doctor and with the Gym (Snap Fittness)
I'll jump through the insurance companys hoops. Just my personal opinion if that if my physcologist had submitted my evaluation, instead of putting it on a shelf, or waiting for who knows what, that I could have had my surgery by Dec 1 2005.

Jan 2006

I have had several bouts with bronchitus, prednizone, and antibiotics, have been unable to exercise without coughing, Have seen the Dr on Jan 12 2006, I have lost 8 lbs, since starting, even with a 12 lb weight gain from the prednizone.
Not much else going on will update again in Feb.

May 7 2006

I have a Dr's appt. tomorrow, after 5 months of Diet and Exercise, I've managed to lose 2 to 3 lbs each month, except for this one.
I gained 2 lbs. Disgusting diet and exercise, and gain weight. I'm doing my best. Hope fully next month will be better, and my insurance co can finally authorize the surgery.

July 22 2006

It's been a while, however after a year of fighting with insurance cos. Weight loss diet and exercise, it is finally here. A surgery date Tuesday July 25.
I'm having a little jitters, but looking forward to being on the losing side.

    Surgeon Info:
    Surgeon: Robert P. Shapiro M.D.
My first impression was that he was very blunt and to the point. I have found out through the surgery, that he explains his plan for diet very thouroughly, and is not as blunt as I first thought. His office staff have always treated me very nicely. Very caring I can't say that there is anything I truly dislike about him. Future patients should know he is very dedicated to his patients, surgery and weight loss program. Through him and his staff, there is a monthly support group meeting for newbies on Wednesday, and post ops on Tuesday. He went through the risks of surgery with me, with a fine tooth comb. All of the pre op testing critiqued finely. Everything was a go before the surgery was scheduled. I think he is a great surgeon, bedside manner is improving . very caring. I'd say his surgical competence and bedside manner are both great. .
