I am sorry I haven't kept up with this. I had the surgery w/Dr. M 5/13/09. It went very well, textbook. Dr. M was amazing. He is all that they say he is...a warm gifted surgeon. The hospital in Brazil was clean and modern. Everyone took great pains to use hand sanitizer, wash, etc. They had me up and washing on day two as well....I can understand why they have such an excellent low infection rate.
I had one moment of doubt where I was frightened. This was prior to surgery, when I'd said "goodbye" to my husband and was wheeled into a waiting area. I was lying there, and people were walking around, speaking in Portugese. I thought about how far away I was from home. I missed my children dreadfully and wondered if I didn't make it through surgery would they think I was some vain silly woman for trying this. But I realized I had to do it. I prayed and felt like God was with me. When they came and got me my fear went away....I went to sleep and *poof* next thing you know I was waking up.
I was very warm for a few days in the hospital. The AC was on but I was sweating. No fever. Just an odd reaction. Everyone in the hospital was SO kind. Durval (the private nurse) was good to me and kind as well. I hated walking in the hospital, but as soon as I got out of there I didn't mind walking. My husband and I saw some sights and it was very pleasant to walk around there. Curitiba is a beautiful city.
The ride home on the airplane was a bear. But I did OK except I didn't drink enough and wound up getting deyhdrated. That really makes you feel like dirt. It was about an 8 week recovery overall, slowly getting back to being myself.
As of this writing, I have lost 100 lbs and feel great. I wish I had done this earlier, instead of the band!

getting ready for surgery

I'm scheduled for surgery on May 13 with Dr. Marchesini in Brazil. I can hardly believe I'm going and that it is really going to happen soon after waiting for over a year and half. I'm very excited and optimistic. I've heard/read nothing but glowing reports about Dr. M. He's been very attentive to my email questions and warm--he tells me he's "waiting for me." :)
back to square one...

I had lap band surgery in '03. I lost 45 lbs, and didn't go down further. No I wasn't great about exercise...I stopped and started. And I wasn't all that great about food either. I need dumping syndrome. I need to take a more drastic step. So now I'm researching RNY. I don't even know if it is possible to have an RNY after being banded. I'm going to ask my doctor tomorrow. I'm nervous about asking. I hope and pray they don't say "no" because I feel like this is my last hope.
