Post Surgery

Aug 19, 2008

I had my surgery Monday, August 11th.

Surgery went well.  My pain lasted all of Monday and then Tuesday it started to get better until I was taken back to get a picture of the pouch.  The power went out twice.  Then the whole staff in that xray room left to go look for something/someone and were gone 20 minutes.  I couldn't find my pain medication button.  By the time they came back I was in the most pain I have felt in a very long time.  I have a high tolerance with pain so this was pretty bad. They came back and I was not only in pain, but not in a good mood either.

My husband was furious when I told him and reported it.  They did a good job at investigating the situation.  They told us that each staff member in that hospital is to care for the patients as if they were their own relative (not leaving them alone, being gentle, etc..).  Maybe the folks that had me at that time were mad with their family members at that time.  HEHEHE

The only problem I am battling is the emotional part of it.   I thought I had made a BIG mistake by having this surgery.  I thought that life was going to be that way forever...liquid diet, small tiny amount, etc...

Day by day I am getting better.  I take it hour by hour.  I have talked to my surgeon's staff and they have told me that this is totally normal. I guess I was expecting to have problems with pain, discomfort, or something of that nature, but No............it is the emotional aspect that has me pretty down.

My stay in the hospital was ok.  I think there needs to be a special floor or buidling for these things to take place though.  Alot of the nurses were not educated on the aftercare of bypass patients.  I had nice nurses and one grumpy one.

Anyway, I stayed a day longer due to a fever and sugars that were still wacky.  Came home and have been resting.  I went for my first walk last night and it felt really good to get out.

My sugars are improving little by little.  I have lost 12 pounds since last Monday.  I can't wait to eat an egg or something like that.

This is it for now.  I will continue to post my journey as I enter new stages.
