My journey began in March 2008. At first I wasn't sure which surgery to have...Lap Band or RNY. I attended the seminar by Dr. Barba and although I still wasn't sure which surgery to go with. I knew immediately I definitely wanted to do something. I met with Melissa the nutritionist at his office. Then I had my pulmonary, cardiac and psych consults all went well. During this time I did alot of research on the different types of WLS. I finally decided that RNY would be the one for me. I finally met with Jason at Dr. Barba's office in late July and got a tentative date for October 13, 2008. I had a small bump in the road with my insurance but it was an easy fix. My PCP's office did not send the 5 years of weight documentation for my insurance approval. Don't know why they only sent 3 years. I finally got the word last week that I have been approved.
I start the required liquid diet tomorrow for two weeks. Many of my friends asked me last week what I would want to eat for my last week. Honestly, I haven't been that interested in food lately. Two weeks ago, I went for the endoscopy and was diagnosed with h pylori. The antibiotics made me so sick for the two weeks that I had to take them. Food was the last thing on my mind.
As surgery gets closer I will get more nervous. I am no stranger to surgery. I have had to arthroscopic surgeries in my right knee. Two foot surgeries and last November I had a left knee replacement. When I had the surgeries on my right knee I ended up with pulmonary embolisms both times. Since I am risk for PE's, that puts me at a greater risk anytime I have surgery. Dr. Barba may decide to put a greenfield filter to prevent any blood clots.
Anyway, I am really looking forward to the real journey beginning as soon as I have my surgery. I am a postive person so I think that will be helpful in getting me through. I also have very supportive family and friends...can't beat that.
