Mary-I am so proud of you for deciding to go ahead with your surgery and for deciding to stop smoking. Dont let Angie (sister) get you down! She has never walked in our shoes. I can understand her concern but to make you feel that way was not very supportive! You will feel so much better once you have it and it is worth it! Some people dont realize that we can die from being over weight and I am so thankful that we have this option. The risk isnt any greater having the actual surgery than staying at a un-healthy weight. Keep your chin up and good luck with becoming a non-smoker! I know you can do it! Your big day is just around the corner! And you are gonna do GREAT!!

Wishing you a safe, uncomplicated surgery and a swift, smooth recovery. I had my Open RNY on 12/10/01 and have no regrets, other than not doing it sooner. God bless you as you begin a new, healthier life.

HI THERE!! Congratulations on your upcoming surgery. You asked about smokers. I smoked for 40 years (I am 53). I started early because I was told that it would stop growth and I was 5' 11" at the time, age 12. I stopped smoking 4 mos before my surgery as the surgeon would not let me go thru with WLS unless I did stop. It was HARD but the best thing I have done for myself, that is beside the surgery. Just keep thinking about your upcoming operation and how much easier it will be on you if you do quit. Good luck to you, I know you can do it.

Mary...the percentage of people who die from this surgery is no greater than the percentage who die from any surgery. For most of us this surgery is a life SAVER! Hang in there! You're going to do just great!
