6 Month Surgeriversary
Jan 15, 2009
Yesterday marked my 6 month anniversary since my surgery. I have experienced a number of ups and down, including a long stall over the holidays and the blood clots, but I am still very happy with the results.
Each day I feel stronger and I have more energy. I'm a fun mom now and both of my boys like playing with me and spending time on walks and bike rides. I am starting to train for my first 5K which has always been a goal of mine.
Learning to eat again was a challenge in the beginning, but has gotten easier with time. Long stringy things like spagetti just don't sit well in my system. But I don't feel great after eating pasta anyhow so that isn't such a bad thing. Over Christmas I did discover that I can each much more sugar than I thought I could. I wish I didn't know that because it was easier to avoid when I expected to have a violent reaction. Now I am back to relying solely on my self control.
I have added a daily protien drink back into my meal plan. I was at a stall thru most of December, but once I added the additional protien in the weight started to come off again. I have also added a lot of stretching into my exercise plan to get back some of my flexibility.
I saw my surgeon this week and there were some concerns with my supplements so I will be doubling my calcium, but everything else seemed to be working the way it should. My hair is still very thin, but not falling out the way it had been. It also seems to be growing again, albiet very slowly.
I have to mention that the support staff at my surgeons office is fantastic, not just with me but with my entire family. I don't think this would have gone so smoothly without all of their support and ready knowledge!
My 6 month mark also marked my move from Obese to Overweight. I don't know many people who would celebrate being overweight, but to me it is a huge step and well worth celebrating.

Finally on to recovery
Aug 29, 2008
This surgery is no joke. I had the RNY bypass on July 14, 2008. Two days later they discovered my bowel had slipped when they were putting me back together and was blocked. This resulted in a second surgery and an intenstinal bypass.
I spent a week at home recovering and was just starting to go back to work when I developed an odd pain in my back. I have a young baby so I figured that I must have pulled a muscle. A trip to the emergency room two days later and I was back in the hospital. I had developed "bilateral pulmonary embolism". Fancy talk for blood clots in the lungs, most likely as a result of the down time during recovery. I was 90% blocked in the right lung, 70% in the left. Eventually I couldn't even get from the hospital bed to the bathroom without assistance.
My 7th day in the hospital the pulmonary specialist came to me as said I would be a pulmonary cripple the rest of my life if I didn't have a "clot buster" treatment. But the treatment had a really high risk of stroke and a 1% chance of death. Not good, but better than not breathing. The clot buster seemed to do the trick and a week later I am out of the hospital and starting to recover.
On the plus side, the surgery seemed to work as I've lost over 40 lbs

Starting out
Jul 07, 2008
First post....always a little scary for me. I am not good with first impressions. I am married to a wonderful man and have been blessed with two little boys. But obviously there are problems that I haven't dealt with that have resulted in this excess weight. I am schedule for RNY on July 14, 2008 (less than a week away) and I am feeling a little jumpy.
A little history
I went from high school to college to the Navy and gained weight a little with each step. The Navy helped me to control my weight due to the forced exercise and twice yearly weigh-ins. I spent 6 years in the Navy, met my Seabee husband and got out to make babies. Since then my weight has continually climbed to it's current high of 260. I have tried different exercise and weight loss programs, but have just never gotten it all together at the same time.
So this is a big step. I keep reading books about the surgery and it seems like my biggest fear - that I will be the one person this doesn't work for - is pretty common. But it sure is nice to have the forums for support when you need a little boost.
