Pre-Op Timeline
Mar 11, 2007
August 2006 - Told my husband I was thinking about having WLS.
September 29, 2006 - Went to see my PCP and told him I wanted to have WLS. He was not very supportive at first but I came with a binder full of research so he quickly saw that I was very serious and not going to take no for an answer. My insurance program at the time was Blue Cross HMO. My doctor told me my best chance of having the surgery paid for would be to change my plan to the PPO. Turns out it was the last day of open enrollment so I immediately called my husband and told him to go and switch out coverage to the PPO plan which he did.
The new plan will take effect January 1, 2007. I made an appointment to come back and see my PCP January 9, 2007.
January 9, 2007 - Went to see my PCP today. He gave me a written referal to see the surgeon to be evaluated for WLS. Came home and immediately called the surgeon's office for an appointment. Felt very lucky to get an appointment 1 week later. Amazingly was also able to make appointments to see the Psychologist and Nutritionist the same day. Very convenient as it is a 2hr drive to see the doctor.
January 16, 2007 - My husband went with me today to all of my appointments. We first went to the surgeons office and had to watch a 1hr video and then saw the doctor. After that we had the Psychologist to see and then Nutritionist. A very long day and I was coming down with a cold.
January 17, 2007 - Went to see my Gynocologist today as part of my pre-op requirement. She was tremendously supportive. She said I can not control my weight with PCOS and that WLS is the best thing I could do for myself if I wanted to live a long and healthy life. A very nice and unexpected affirmation of my decision.
February 13, 2007 - Finally all my pre-op tests and evals are in and have been read and approved by the surgeons office and now will be submitted to my insurance requesting approval for WLS. Everything will be submitted by 5pm today. The doctors office has advised my to call my insurance in 3 days to confirm they have received everything.
February 15, 2007 - Very excited and so suprised! Got a call this afternoon from my insurance to notify me they approved my surgery. Wow! I got my approval in less than 48hrs. Totally amazing. After calling everyone I could think of I called my surgeons office to confirm with them. I now have a surgery date of March 26th, 2007! My new birthday. Very excited and very grateful.
