Time Has Flown!
Jan 06, 2012
Here we are in a brand new year. Time flies when you've got a lot going on it seems
I didn't finish my Medical Assisting degree in November as I'd hoped, but I AM finishing it on the 24th of this month! I've done my internships at two places too. The first being Central Maine Bariatrics the other Concentra both in Lewiston. Now I will have to get on the ball and find a job.
My daughter has moved to Virginia with her boyfriend and his family. My 21 year old son has married his middle school sweetheart and they'll soon be living in Farmington, Maine. He is still in the Army Reserves and has risen up in rank several times. He is now a Sargent First Class. My youngest son, having turned 18 in August, has decided to also enlist in the Army. He should be "sworn in" sometime new week. I'm going to be suffering from the "empty nest syndrome" real soon. I'm happy for ALL my kids, but I'm heart broken too. I guess that comes with the "mother" territory.
I'm doing well weight and health wise. I still say I am thrilled to have had the surgery as I can do so much more and enjoy life much more because of it!

I'm Still Here
Aug 02, 2011
It's hard to believe I recently passed my 4 year anniversary. I've managed to maintain my weight-loss, although I did regain about 10 pounds. I'm glad I did, as people were asking me if I was ill before those 10 pounds came back. Even 4 years put, I still get comments about my weight-loss. One church acquaintance has given me the nickname "Skinny Mini" which makes me laugh each time she says it. At the beginning, I couldn't accept those kinds of comments because, I wasn't comfortable with "the new me" yet. Now, I can laugh and accept it for what it is, a compliment!
A lot has happened since my last post here. I've graduated from UMA (University of Maine @ Augusta) with my Associate Degree in Liberal Studies. I'm still working at Hannaford and am still in the Bakery. We do have a new Manager and she is a breath of fresh air that was badly needed in that department. I still work only part-time (my hours are pretty sparce except when people are on vacation.) but I've still been going to school. This time I'm aiming for a Medical Assisting Degreee and should have that in hand by November! I'll be doing my externship at CMMC (Central Maine Medical Center) where I had my surgery 4 years ago. I"m required to do 160 hours during my externship and I hope to do part of it in Dr. Loggin's office.
Speaking of Dr. Loggins , his office has expanded and he now has a collague and an expanded staff. The office has received the "Bariatric Center of Excellence" distintion as well. Although he may have more on his plate (pardon the pun) He remains the same down to earth physician that he was 4 years ago. The support given by that entire staff is still as warn, friendly and meaningful.
All of my children are now grown. My "baby" graduated from high school this past June. My daughter has returned to Maine from her 2 years in Washington state and my middle son turned 21 this past April and is still in the Army Reserves.

1 Year Surgiversary !!
Jul 29, 2008
It's hard to believe that it's already been a year since I've had the surgery. What a year it's been !!!
I had my share of doubts and second guessing before I had it done....right up to the few minutes before I was wheeled into surgery! But looking back on how far I've come since, I'd do it all again ( but really shouldn't HAVE to.....if I take care of myself LOL)
The year has been one of self discovery in many ways. Rediscovering life in ways I'd forgotten , watching my body change and STILL wondering "Is this REALLY me?", being able to be active again and......even venturing to TRY things The biggest thing though, is learning (or re-learning) to love me for ME ! There are STILL times I look in the mirror and see a "fat" person. But that is only an impression. One that I grown quite use to over the years. I'm slowly beginning to accept the compliments from others and realizing that this person I've "become" has been there all along .....just hidden away.
I've always been a person of faith. But I now feel like a faith FILLED person.
There are MANY reasons to be THANKFUL this day.

Onward We Go!
Jul 01, 2008
Yesterday marked 11 months into this journey of rediscovery!
Last year at this time, I'd been offered a surgery date of July 2ed but had to ask for a later date due to the musical production I was in. I, in essence, carried my excess baggage around for an extra month!
Here I am, virtually a year later and......how my life has changed!

I've literally lost a "complete person" with regard to size. I'm not ill...rather, I'm healthier than I've ever been!
What a difference that alone can do. I'm able to enjoy life again and in so many different ways.
I've always had a firm belief in God, yet even that has become stronger in recent months.

My daughter Amanda turned 22 yesterday. Jon (18) is out of high school
and preparing for college as well as a stint in the Army Reserves. Patrick (15 as of 8/05) is regretting his inattentiveness during the school year and is attending summer school in order to remain with his classmates. ( He admits that he has "no one to blame but himself" He tells us that we were right in getting after him yet he just refused to listen. He is now paying the price.)
I've been working at Hannaford now for 8 months and am feeling more and more comfortable with the job daily.
Jon's best friend Nate , is staying with us for the bulk of the summer as he wants to get a job but hardly has anything to choose from in Pittsfield. I've therefore, gained another son over the summer months!
My husband continues his daily routes as a bank courier. I've gotten him to "change his eating habits" somewhat and he has managed to get rid of a good 20 pounds himself. Spiritually he too is seeing changes for the better.
Bob and I did the Offertory music for the 8:00am service at First Baptist Church in Waldoboro this past Sunday. We have been friends with the pastor for over 10 years. We performed a piece that Bob, himself had composed some 28 years ago. We were well received and, as always, it was an honor to Praise God in this manner.
My year follow-up is on July 31st with Dr. Loggins and his staff. I wonder where I'll be then?

I'm Actually Shocked!!!!
Jun 01, 2008
I've been on a plateau.......a stall if you will...... just a little over the goal I'd set for myself, for a good month now. I haven't really complained, as I felt that my body was adjusting and....if I lost the remainder of the weight it would just be "icing on the cake!" At this point in my journey, my mantra has been....."I've lost the bulk of the weight and I'm feeling SOOOOOO much better. If I lose what little I have left to lose that will be great but I feel great even where I am now!"
Went to the graduation of my son's best friend Nate in Pittsfield, Me. yesterday and attended a party for him afterwards. I felt I would not be the "wall flower" of sorts and enjoy the food spread that was provided. I also know what amount my pouch can handle safely. I had a tuna salad finger roll, a small hand full of chips, 8 small carrot sticks, 2 small celery slices, a small hand full of M&M's and later on...a glass of water. ( I did not gorge myself, rather I kept my plate by my side and nibbled while chatting with others and singing Kareoke) No dumping and no bloated side effects AND.......this morning I AM BELOW MY GOAL !!!!!!
I've adopted the philosophy that I can eat virtually anything but in smaller portions AND with a bit more restraint.I DO however still refrain from eating "sweets" (never been a sweet-a-holic anyway) and if I DO get a sweet craving, I've waited 10 minutes or so before indulging to see if the craving would go away....if it does not, then I satisfy myself with one bite of something sweet (like our mini danish bites in the Hannaford bakery.) One bite is all it takes for me. I'm satisfied and go along my merry way.
I realize not everyone can do this......but for me, depriving myself of things does not work either. IF, after waiting 10 minutes or so, whatever craving I have isn't gone, I cure it with just a little bit of food that would stop that craving. I also know the limits of my pouch and respect that. I DO NOT go over board and because of this I've not "dumped" since early in my journey. I DO NOT drink soda at all....and haven't for quite a while now. I actually PREFER water.
Several of the ladies at the party yesterday called me the "Incredible Shrinking Woman" and I felt kind of pleased with that title as it's something I really needed to do for MYSELF. My health is certainly much better because of it and I find myself enjoying life more. It's been an incredible journey....which is by no means over even now.
This coming Friday my son Jon graduates from Lewiston High. We won't have the kind of gathering his friend Nate had, as our family is much smaller but the emotions will be the same for me as they were for Nate's mom Wendy.. Jon is also attending "project graduation" directly after graduation so any cake we have will be had on Saturday.

10 Months Out!!!
May 30, 2008
10 Months Out and almost at the goal I set out to reach over a year ago!!
I still find it hard to believe that all of this has happened in so short a period of time. I continue to think of it as a dream, and a really good one at that, that I don't want to wake up from.
A lot has happened since my surgery date back in late July of last year. Much of it good too. There is too much to really get into here but I will say that my spiritual walk...and outlook...has strengthened. My self esteem has also risen as has my overall energy level. I won't say that I'll "conquer the world" but I feel more ambition now then I ever have to be able to attempt things I would never have given thought to in the past.
Will I have pitfalls and set backs ? Most probably....( nothing is completely free of road blocks) but I feel I'm in a much better place NOW to handle these situations then I was even a year ago. Looking back on it now I can see that my weight WAS indeed playing havoc with my entire system (emotional as well as physical) If I'd been able to see it ( call it hindsight being 20/20) I would have fought harder not to get into the rut I was in. Then again, maybe it was God's way of getting me to "sit up and finally take notice" I needed to go through it in order to be at where I am right now. From here on out, I plan to view these pitfalls, stalls and/or set backs as stepping stones (other wise know as learning experiences.)
DO i have ALL the answers? No, I don't. I freely admit that. But I DO feel that I'm getting to know myself better daily

Happy Mother's Day!
May 11, 2008
Spent the day yesterday with a dear friend, doing errands and just enjoying the day. We stopped into Fashion Bug to "browse" and also because I wanted to see if, by chance, they had some slacks on "sale" that I could use for work.
I found some and, to my surprise, I've gone down to a SIZE 8 in slacks!
Never in my mind did I ever expect to see THAT size ever again. A year ago, had someone told me I'd be a size 8 the following year, I would have had a good laugh. It's surreal !!!!!!!!!!
Yesterday too marked my "graduation" with my Associates Degree in Liberal Studies from the University of Maine at Augusta.
I decided that I'd not march with the class this time around but rather, would wait and march for my Bachelors Degree which is still some 10 classes away.
My son Jon graduates from Lewiston High School on June 6th! We have an "Orientation Day" at Thomas College with him on June 14th and he begins his life away from home in late August. As for his enlistment in the Army Reserves, he is now a Reservist but will be leaving for Basic Training (in So. Dakota) only on December 31st. As he jokes.......He'll get to wish his commander a "Happy New Year!" For the time being,he continues to work at Hannaford as a cashier and will transfer to the Hannaford in Waterville once college starts.
MOTHER'S DAY.........what a difference between this year and last! My daughter is now living/working in Everett, Washington. My oldest son will soon be on his way to college/ the Army and a life "without" mom, and my youngest son will be the only one still home entering his second year of high school.
Last year at this time I was 115 pounds heavier and was not a member of the "working" community. Look at me now!
How the time has flown.
My own mother is in a nursing home and will be celebrating a milestone of her own come August 15th as she will turn 90 years old! She is the last living member of her birth family and, although she occasionally feels "forgotten" by her parents/siblings, she continues to enjoy life as best she can daily.
What a year it's been!

Make that 9 Months Out!
Apr 30, 2008
In looking back at my past posts, I came to realize that I'd done my math incorrectly.
I had my surgery on 7/30/07 which makes it a full 9 months as of yesterday!
I still find it a bit hard to believe that, just a year ago I was 112 pounds heavier than I am now. Before having it done, I told very few people (for a number of reasons.) Now, people are amazed at what I've "accomplished" and wish me the best.
I certainly can't complain about my energy level as, it's gone "through the roof" since day one. I wear my pedometer daily and average approximately 62,000 steps a week! (give or take) I surprise people constantly when I say I'll "walk" when it requires going a mile or two instead of taking a car. (unless, of course I know I'll have packages etc. to carry back with me!
) I walked all the time before my mom got her first car back in 1972. Why can't I go back to doing that now? (I also weighed even a bit less then I do now back in 1972 too!)
Had blood work done last week for my PCP and had the results also forwarded to Dr. Loggins so that he may be kept up to date as well. Haven't heard anything yet but should soon. I WAS told by my PCP that she does not now consider me a diabetic any more as my A1c's have always come back in the "normal" range since surgery day. I certainly don't mind "keeping an eye on it" with daily testing, as it just reassures me further that I've gotten my health back.
My "YEAR" check-up with Dr. Loggins is on July 31st at 8:00 am. When I last "checked in" with them, I was at 150 pounds. (Today I'm at 144.4 lbs.) Let's just see where I am come appointment time.

7 Months Out Today!!!
Mar 30, 2008
While getting dressed in a size 10 outfit this morning, I happened to look at the calendar I keep in my room and realized that I'm exactly 7 months out from surgery today!
I still find it hard to believe that just 7 months ago I wore a size 24/26 and had a closet pretty full of clothes. I am now down to a size 8/10 and my closet has seem a reduction as well. ( I can see the back wall where I just couldn't before!) I still have several pairs of slacks with elastic waists that I still try to tell myself fit. (I'm slowly coming to realize I STILL have to hike them up often even if they DO have elastic waistbands) I guess you could say it's time they were given away as has the rest of my "larger" wardrobe.
What a gift I've been given! The "rebirth" of a slimmer, healthier ME!
My stress level has begun to increase a bit as my middle son turns 18 this coming month and he'll soon be graduating from high school and going off to Thomas College. He also has decided to enlist in the Army Reserves and will train as a linguist! I'm proud that he wants to serve his country (They'll help pay for college too) but, even with the assurances that, as a Reservist (and a linguist at that) he'll not see the "front lines" it still puts a very hard lump in my throat!
Jon is the second child to leave the nest, you'd think I'd be a bit more prepared and accepting, but inwardly, I'm not. He graduates from high school on June 6th, and will leave for basic training later in June. He'll be gone all summer only to return in time to hurry and get ready for the start of college classes!
Patrick will be the only child left here at home. I know he'll miss Jon a lot too as, although they bicker a lot, they are close. Patrick will be 15 in August. My days of 24 hour parenting are slowly coming to a close and I now feel extremely thankful that I had the surgery so as to truly be able to enjoy these last years as a family unit.

Boy! Have I changed!
Mar 24, 2008
I found a photo of my daughter and me that was taken back in 2003. We had been asked to sing at a friend's wedding. (My husband and I have performed together for the past 28 years! My daughter has developed her talent for singing as well.) What a difference in my appearance. I hope Amanda stays as thin as she has been.
