I started this new journey around 03/02. I was shocked at how fast everything went. The most amazing thing is that medicaid paid for every cent. My mom was the one who told me to ask our OBGYN, who at the time was Dr Wright Frances. She networked with alot of black Doctors in the area. Well luck was with me that day. When I went to see her I told her about the surgery and asked her if she knew any one seeing people with medicaid. She gave me Dr Kermie Robinson's phone #, which convientaly happened to be around the corner. I called his office and sure enough he did except medicaid.
After the first appointment, everything was so fast. I had my labs done in a week. And my appointment with the Psych went well of course. The longest part was waiting for a surgery date. WOW I feel like I have told this story a million times. Funny thing is if I can help anyone come closer to an understanding or give them hope, I will tell it a million more.
Okay time to sign on the dotted line. I was at my last visit before surgery and I got scared. All of a sudden my brain wanted to switch to saftey mode. All I could think of was all these side effects and things that could go wrong during and after surgery. Well honey after he weighed me that last time and the scale said 386, I looked at him and said," where do I sign"?????
Lets talk about the day after surgery when your body is like what happened? I was so sick. I hated everybody. How dare yall take my food away. I couldnt even drink water. This was really hard for me at first. I will say this, if you are considering this surgery it is very important to have a good support group at home. At that time I had my young Boyfriend who I had been with for about 2yrs. He was there but not enough. I had to get up and back to business in about two weeks. It takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks to even think about getting back to business. Especailly with an open gastric. But I will not complain because we are not together anymore. All I can tell you is have some help. Especailly with kids.
For the first 6 months my weight dropped dramaticlly! I lost 60 pnds the first three weeks. I lost majority of my weight in the first year. I feel blessed and I would do it all over again. I have had two stomach surgeries since then and I am now working my ass offin the gym. I platoed at 212. Wow life goes amazingly fast!!! I had my surgery 7-24-02 so I will be 5yrs post-op in July. i have gained 12 pounds since I moved in with my girlfriend. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that...... The surgery had a reverse effect on me! When I first lost the weight I was facinated by all the attention. Shortly after a year I grew tired of the consent remarks and sexual comments from men. My ex boyfriend also noticed the new attention and became jealous and irrate, to the point where we were forced to split, you know like by law!!!! And thats when it or should I say she happened. Life is truely ironic. In Oct 2002 I met a women who later became my bestfriend. We were extremely close because she was a "Fat Girl" with confidence, A "Fat Girl" who really didnt give a damn if you like her or not. She gave me strength and couraged on many occasions when I had none!!!! I told her about the surgery and she was interested. In 3/2004 she had her gastric....
