The ups and downs
Nov 01, 2010
Got to see the EGD doctor yesterday and he states that I would normally not be some one that they would do an ablation on, but since I'm looking to have surgery it would be a good thing. His office got me scheduled for Monday October 8, at 9:00 am. Well needless to say I left his office on cloud nine just a few hours later to be knocked off.
Around 4:30 his nurse called to tell my that in most case BCBS KS does not cover ablation surgery. She would call in the morning and find out and let me know. Now let me just that there was someone in my office that did have an ablation for something else and the insurance did cover it. I'm hoping that it not by the type of ablation that you getting that they look at, just that it's an ablation. Just to be safe I asked the cost, but since it is outpaitent in the hospital she was not sure so she would get that for me as well.
It seems that everytime I take a step forward and think that this is real, I'm forced to take two back. I keep praying to the Lord that this will happen. I've even decided to slow and not have it take place until next year.
I want this so I will keep fighting and not give up.

Bummer of a week with a bright spot
Oct 29, 2010
This week started off bad, but now that it is at the end it has gotten better. First let me say that I now have my mom on board with surgery and that I have chanced my surgery choice.
On October 8th I took my mom with me to another WLS seminar and while we were there at the same time we both zoned in on the DS. It was so funny we were listening and then looked at each other and said "Won't this fit me better?" Well I changed my suregery on that day. I would have to change surgeons as well since the first doctor that I saw does not do the DS.
Got my appt with the new surgeon on Monday October 25th. Let me state here that I have Barrett's and I had told the first surgeon this, but because Barrett's is not effected by the RNY he must not have made a note in my chart. So we have gone all the way through the consult and I was just about ready to leave when my mom asked about how DS surgery would effect my Barrett's. The surgeon put on the brakes and did some back peddling. It's not that she can't do surgery on some one with Barrett's it if she should.
See Barrett's is a precurser to cancer of the esophagus, and should you get the cancer then the only cure is to cut it out and strech the stomach up. Now after DS the main blood supply to the stomach is removed so there would be no streching of the stomach, they would need to use my colon to replace the stomach. The surgeon said she would be remiss if she went ahead and did the surgery. So needless to say I was very bummed when I left her office.
Tuesday October 26th, I get a call from my surgeon and she has spoken with my EGD doctor and there a new procedure called ablation to remove the Barrett's. The surgeon stated that if I can have the ablation done and the Barrett's is removed then she would be more willing to do the DS.
Wedensday October 27th, I had and appt with my physc nurse and we talked about what happened on Monday and Tuesday. She brought up two very good reasons not to rush the surgery. The first one is that Dr. Brenstein who is my surgeon takes vacation the first part of the year, and won't it be better to have surgery with a surgeon who is rested and fresh after time off then a surgeon who is tried at the end of the year. Second she has been consulting WLS patients for six years and has found that those that have surgery in the spring do better than those that have surgery in the fall.
Thursday October 28th, I get a call from my EGD doctor and have an appt to see him on Monday November 1st to talk about the ablation.
Friday October 29th, I have taken a step back done some praying on this and came to the decision that I do not want to settle for the RNY, and this way I will be able to have the surgery that I want, but I will just need to wait a little while longer. I have started following the Vitalady pre-op schedule for protein intake, and soon will start the pre-op vitamin schedule. I'm working on eating more like I will need to after surgery, so that I will be physical ready for surgery.
I now hoping that I can have surgery sometime in late March or early April and hope to be much lighter by this time next year.

The Journey Begins
Aug 30, 2010
My real journey began when I was in my teens. Like most people in this boat it's been a up hill battle. I have given thought to WLS several differnet times in my life, but also thought that I can do it on my own. Each time that I did make it on my own I would gain back the loss plus more pounds. Then the first part of July I stepped on the scale and there it was the number that would make me finally take on surgery no matter the cost.
The scale said 280, OMG just twnety pounds from 300. The highest that I had ever been. That day I started researching for someone to do WLS in the city of Topeka. I found Tallgrass and learned that to start thier program the first step is to attend one of their seminars. I had just missed the July one so it was wait until the August seminar. August 14, 2010 came and I was up early to make sure that I was on time, since the information stated that if you were late you didn't get in.
As I walked in I was thinking about doing banding as I wasn't sure I wanted that much change in my life. I listened to what the doctor had to say, and this changed my mind and now I'm looking at RNY, maybe even DS. The goal that I want to hit first is to get off my shots for diabetes. I have had diabetes for 12+ years so I know that I may never get off pills, but I do really want to get off shots.
August 17 was my mother's birthday so that was when I told her. I thought she would be on my side and happy for me, but that's not what happened. She is dragging her feet because I have to do this a self pay since I have BCBS of KS, and they dont pay any on WLS. I going forward though and hope as the time gets closer she will get on board and be happy for me.
I take the next step on September 9th when I visit with Dr. Hamliton of the Tallgrass. I will let you know how things go.
