Hi, my name is Kensey. I'm 23 years old and have been overweight most of my life. When I was a freshman in college, however, I finally got things together and made it to as close to my goal weight as I had ever been. I felt great! Then, I decided to start taking birth control. After talking with my doctor, I decided to try the Depo-provera shot. It is an injection you take every three months. The first three months were fine. It was easy and I didn't notice any of the side-effects the doc mentioned might occur. "Some weight gain" was listed as a possibility. Almost immediately after the 2nd shot I began to put on weight. I packed on 70 pounds within three months with no change to my diet or excercise program. I can honestly say that watching my body dissapear before my eyes and feeling totally helpless in the process was one of the most horrific and humiliating experiences of my life. Fast forward 5 years...after endless unsucessful dieting attempts and the development of a totally unhealthy relationship with food I am finally committing to getting my life and my health back on track.
Nov. 2007 - My personal physician reccommends gastric surgery; specifically Lap-Band
Feb. 2008 - Attended an info session in Portland, OR. and met Dr. Emma Patterson for the first time
March 2008 - Sleep study is normal
March 2008 - Completed all pre-testing for surgery. A couple low vitamin levels, but otherwise am good to go.
April 2008 - Follow-up appointment to check on vitamin levels. Scheduled consult with Dr. Patterson.
May 1, 2008 - Entered Dr. Patterson's office expecting to have surgery delayed until I move to New Orleans at the end of the month. Instead, surgery is scheduled for next Friday.
May 9th, 2008 - After a last minute approval by my insurance company, I underwent surgery at 7:30 am.
May 12th, 2008 - Made contact with Dr. Paige in New Orleans who will be providing my follow-up care. Made my first appointment for next month.
May 13th, 2008 - A few days post-op and although I am pretty sore, I can already feel the weight melting off.
