12th final week!
Jan 26, 2011
I can't believe the class is over. I lost a total of 15lbs. I am now just waiting for my psych eval on Feb 10th and then after that my referral will be put into the surgeon. I am excited! San Joaquin Hospital has 3 docs who are specialized in bariatrics so that is good. I think I will go to the seminar on the 8th to find out more. Teresa, one of the ladies teaching the class said usually when she sends the referral it will come back the next day and then the next week or so a surgeon will call and within a few days or so you'll be called to go in for wls. I couldn't believe it will be that fast. She also said that SJVH has special days set aside just for Kaiser patients. Whoo Hoo!

11th week
Jan 19, 2011
We learned this week about being assertive, aggressive, and passive. I think I am pretty well balanced. I don't let people walk all over me but I know when I was younger I didn't want to hurt my granny's feeling and dang it, I ate that second piece of pie she made. My gallbladder ultrasound went well even though it took about 30 minutes to do. It was kind of relaxing. THEN...I have my upper GI. HORRIBLE! First, they tell you it will take 2-3 hours to complete. Ugh! Then, I was on the x-ray table and they tilt it so you slide towards the end of the table until you are upright. That was kinda cool actually. Then the doctor comes in and makes you swallow this gawd awful crystals followed by a gulp of water. This I think was to put air in your stomach. Then the x-ray tech gives you this gawd awful barium. It is like liquid chalk with a nasty strawberry aftertaste. You have to drink like 16 oz of that vile stuff and then you lie back down and the tech takes more x-rays. Then you get to wait for 30 minutes to see if it reached your small intestines or not. So 30 min comes and goes. The first look it was not there yet. So I get to wait another 30 minutes on the exam table. No tv or magazine or cell phone. Just me and my thoughts. Now it's an hour later and finally the barium was in my small intestines. I got there at my appointment time of 9:45am and went to lunch around 1pm. Oh and you have to fast before these tests so I was like starving. Good thing I was able to eat right after the tests. One more week and I will be done. Now just waiting on the psych test. Someone told me the psych eval was $250 but I asked Kaiser and good thing my co-pay was only $20. So I am a happy camper right now.

9th and 10th week
Jan 19, 2011
Let's see...what did we talk about. Well, we learned about what our diets will be after we have our surgery. Mainly what we are going to be eating and the various stages of what types of food we can have. Sucking on ice chips and sipping broth sounds fabulous! Just kidding. My gallbladder ultrasound and upper gi are both scheduled. Can't believe I'm almost done with the class.

8th week
Jan 10, 2011
Well, this week was actually 2 weeks because of the holidays. We learned about vitamins and the importance of them. I actually gained a few punds but the day of my class I got right back up on that pony. We also learned about the major 3 types of wls that SJVH does. The instructor really steered us away from the Lap Band, which was what I orginally wanted when I was less educated, and then she talked about the sleeve, but then she talked about the RNY which is what I think I am going to get. It is said to be the best for diabetics. I'm only worried about the stomach still being able to stretchout and the sleeve not so much. Overall though, I pretty much have my heart set on the RNY. I can't believe the class will meet only 3 more times. We will see what happens.

7th Week
Dec 08, 2010
This week we learned all about exercise and why it is important. We also learned about the right kind of shoes to buy. I currently watch a video on cable, the exercise channel, it's by Leslie Sansone. I am just doing the 1 mile walk right now. It is pretty easy . I am thinking of moving up to the 2 mile walk in 30 min. I really can't wait for spring time so I can use my pool.
We also found out for sure that at the end of Dec., Kaiser will no longer pay for your travel down to San Diego. I was kind of wanting to go there to Pac Bar but now think it would be easier just to got to Bakersfield. We were also told our class would be one of the first to go thru San Joaqiun Hospital in Bakersfield. I really hope the wait is not going to be like 3-4 moths after the Options calss. That would suck!

6th week of Options
Nov 30, 2010
Today we had a quick overview of what we have learned. We also went over the helpfulness of daily affirmations and the differences between pessimists and optimists. I am an optimist, personally. You'll never get thru life if you're a negative nancy. The last hour of the class our teacher brought in 2 past class members. There were 2 guys who shared their stories and wl journey's with us. They were pretty informative but I was looking forward to hearing a woman's pov.
Then, I could have sworn I hear one of the teachers say that at the Pac-Bar lecture they were going to have doctor's from SJVH. Nope! There was 1 doc from Pac-Bar who was 30 minutes late and most of the info didn't pertain to me because I Was told my class will be going to SJVH for surgery. What a waste! I am considering changing my surgery I want to gastric bypass so I can get rid of my diabetes. I know both the sleeve and rny help but the doc said the rny is better.

5th week
Nov 30, 2010
Well, 5th week of Options class was pretty boring but I'm sure I'll use the info later after surgery. This week was all about breathing technique's. I'm more concerned about how I will get thru the holiday.

4th Options Class
Nov 11, 2010
So far so good! Tuesday was week 4. We learned about protein drinks and supplements. I have been drinking a protein drink from Wal-Fart. It's Body Fortress and tastes pretty good. I got the chocolate one and it costs about $15 for big 'ol container. I had my EKG on the same day and it was "normal". I don't know if I said but my class is going to be 15 weeks long instead of the 12 due to the holidays but I think I will do well. Thanksgiving is coming up. I will be cooking for my hubby because he will be working on Thanksgiving :( But I will be out with my mom and the rest of our family at Mimi's Cafe. Looking forward to class 5!

3rd Options class
Nov 02, 2010
Had my 3rd Options class. We learned how to count fats, meats, and veggies. I lost 4 pounds so I guess that's a good thing. My brother started to walk with me so that's a good thing. We'll see how long that last. (Heehee). I go have my first EKG on the 9th. I'm nervous about that but I've never had any problems. Next week we learn about our protein drinks. I think they should have done that last week because we've all bought our drinks and bars. Whatever! Diet is going well, I am not really hungry as I get to eat about 1600 calories a day. We'll see what next week brings!

2nd Options class
Oct 29, 2010
Well, Tuesday was my 2 nd Options class. I have made my appt. to get an Ekg and do my health appraisel. We learned about counting starches and fruits. Exciting, I know. We finally got to meet the nutritionist. She seems very nice and educated in her field. I haven't lost really that much since starting. I started my protien drink-Body Fortress from Wal-Fart. It tastes pretty decent but upsets my stomach. I tried it with non-fat milk. Yesterday, I tried it with water and did ok. Maybe I'll go back to the water.
I was given 1600-1700 calories daily, which is a lot to me because before when I dieted I reduced down to 1200. I have been exercising. I've been doing the Leslie Sanson vids on cable's exercise channel. I work up a sweat.
Until next week.
