I have struggled with obesity/morbid obesity for most of my life. I have tried everything that I could possibly afford or endure but failed time after time. I even mastered the art form of scale dodging (avoiding scales at any cost). I did this every time I had a doctor's appointment.
Luck eventually ran out and my new doctor asked me to get weighed. As the medical assistant moved over the metal thing that calculates the weight I suddenly realized that I was heavier than the scale capacity (350 lbs.). I was mortified and embarrassed. I figured I might have weighed 270 lbs. I was so wrong. How did this happen? More importantly, why did I allow it to happen? I was faced with an issue I could no longer deny and ignore. I obviously had to do something about it.
My doctor in San Antonio asked me to consider weight loss surgery.
I looked into it and attended an educational seminar with Dr. Pilcher's group . I was finally ready to take charge of my life when suddenly my insurance policy at work messed up my plans. The policy had a "written exclusion" for the treatment of obesity (surgical and non-surgical) regardless of medical necessity.
I personally think physicians should ultimately decide who should or shouldn't have surgery rather than employers and/or insurance companies. It's all about the almighty dollar and not about patient.
I work in the medical field and it's safe to say this industry has the worst insurance coverage. My policy at the time was full of exclusions and reasons why this or that couldn't be covered.
UPDATE July 2007 - I got a new job. This job will pay for surgery if I meet their medical criteria. Yes! There is a glimmer of hope. Details later.
