Liquid Diet

Mar 04, 2009

I'm on day 2 of my liquid diet.  It's really not as bad as I thought it would be...yet.  I never thought I would want broth...but tonight I wanted something salty.  I had my fiance' make me some Raman Noodles and remove the noodles for me.  It was so good and filling.  Prior to this, I've just been having sugar-free jello and the Atkins shakes along with my 1 yogurt per day.  So, hopefully...the next 12 days will fly.  I'm so ready for this surgery.  I have my upper GI scheduled for this Friday and my labs as well.  Next Thursday I have my pre-op appointment and then on the 17th....SURGERY!  Whoo-hoo!

Triceps, Biceps, and lots of other ceps

Let me just start off by saying I was very nervous about meeting with the trainer.  I didn't know what to expect...I was hoping it wouldn't be Bob or Jillian from THE BIGGEST LOSER.  When I got to the gym on Monday, my trainer introduced himself as Chris.  He seemed very friendly, in his mid 40's and in very good shape.  For some crazy reason it was comforting to see that he had hearing aids in both ears (prob. thinking maybe he would have compassion since he had a disability - idk).  He started by taking me into his office and having me fill out some paperwork.  Then he told me that he would be working up a plan for me to do during the week.  He would be with me on Mondays then I was to come alone on two other days a week.  He recommened taking a day off in between sessions.  So, I will be going Monday, Tuesday, and Friday.  He said he will be having me do a warm-up, cardio, strength training, and then a cool-down.  So, he said for my warm up he wanted me to walk around the indoor track 3 times.  Afterwards, I was to come back to his office.  So, while walking around this track I was thinking...heck this should be my exercise!  Ha!  I came back to his office only to be humiliated as he measured my "girth."  I was just praying that the tape measure would go around me.  Thankfully, it must have been a super long one b/c it went around!  He measured my arms, chest, stomach, hips, thighs (that was nice), and calves.  Then he asked my height and weight, I was truthful.  Next he took me out to the workout area and put me on a treadmill.  The kicker was he wouldnt let me hold on.  He said the only people he lets hold on are those who come in using walkers!

I felt like I was going to fall.  He said if necessary, I could use my fingertips.  Surprisingly, I was able to walk without holding on.  He put the speed at 2.5 mph and wanted to see how long I could go.  He said he didn’t expect me to go half and hour today.  But, if I did 5 minutes, then he wanted 6 minutes next week.  He left me walking and came back after 6 minutes.  He asked if I could do another 4 and I said yes I could.  He said he wanted me to stop at 10, and I did.  After about 6 minutes my back started to hurt a little so I was grateful.  Then we went to all these different weight machines.  I was working my triceps, biceps, and a whole lot of other muscles I didn’t realize I had.   I was doing 2 sets of 15 on each machine.  My legs were lifting 130 pounds, and I think most of my arms were 30 pounds.  The barbell I lifted to do curls was 18 pounds.  After a bunch of different machines, he had me go into the stairwell.  He add me walk up and down a step 15 times twice.  He said we would work up to going up the whole flight – I dread that day.  Well, afterwards I had to walk around the track 3 times to cool down.  It took about 1 hour for everything at the gym.  I felt accomplished but tired when I was done.  So, I’m supposed to go back today (which is Wednesday).  I’ll let you know how I did on my own….

Diet and Exercise Program

I had my meeting with the nutritionist on Friday morning.  She basically told me that she would just be reviewing nutrition with me since I've done it all before.  She wants me to adhere to a 1600 calorie diet and follow the exchange program (carbs, protein, fat).  She went over which foods fell in each category.  She also told me some of the foods I wouldn't be able to eat after surgery:  breads, carbs, sweets.  She said I wouldnt be able to have carbonated beverages for the first year ( I was glad to hear it was only a year - I thought it was forever).  She said that most people who follow the 6 month diet/exercise program before surgery are better equipped after surgery.  That gave me hope.  I also had my orientation at the gym.  When I got there, he said...."are you ready to work out?"  I said..."I thought this was just an orientation!" Ha!  I actually did pack a bag but I left my tennis shoes.  So, we scheduled my first session with the trainer on Monday.  UGH...a few more days of leisure.....

I got the paperwork from my insurance company to start the 6 month diet and excercise program (required before surgery).  I went to the doctor yesterday and he feels like the surgery will be good for me.  He said genetically I'm preconditioned to being overweight (both sides of the family) and knows I've tried to lose weight so many times.  He feels like this will change my life.  So, he approves and signed the necessary paperwork for my insurance company to get me started.  YEAH!

I'm anxious to get this ball rolling.....
