My journey started in 2004. I found out then that I had diabetes and after having high blood pressure, sleep apnea, high cholesterol and recurring heartburn from being overweight that was the last straw. I went to Dr. Mailapur's seminar in December and had my visit in December 2004. They called Feb 18 2005 and said I had been approved. I had surgery on March 18th 2005. The surgery was a little complicated I ended up having two leaks had the first two surgeries lap then the third was open. No fault to Dr. Mailapur. Leaks are a risk and if anything is going to be complicated it is with me. Had to be put on a ventilator for 13 days. In SICU for 16 days. FINALLY on April 1st took the tube out and I was awake. Had complications from incsicion opening. Due to the fact I was not getting in enough protein to heal properly and I had started back smoking again. Finally in Nov 2005 everything was completely healed.
From the 1st day home from the hospital I have not been on any blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes or heart burn medicine and no cpap. HURRAY.
If I had to do it all over again I would. I hate that my family and friends had to go through all that but they all know it was worth it. I am healthy and happy.
Dr. Mailapur was great through everything. He was especially excellent with my family and friends he was always there to answer any questions. He gave my husband all his numbers and always called to let him know everything that was going on.
My best friend who said she would NEVER do it. Did it and Dr. M did hers also.
I started at 240 when I had surgery I was 236 I am now at 120 and 20 months post op.
