I've never been known for my blogging skills....

I had surgery on 3/11/09 and I'm doing great!  It's been hard, but I'm feeling good and as of this morning, I've lost a total of 67 pounds.  I've got to get some new pants soon because all the ones I have are way too loose!  That feels so good!  I haven't been this weight for probably about 15 years and I just can't wait to do all the things I've always told myself I couldn't do because of my size.

I am so glad I had the surgery and I would recommend it to anyone like me!

Had my first round of appointments yesterday!

Oct 29, 2008

I had my first round of appointments at Weight Wise yesterday.  I went to the seminar 9/23/08 with Dr. Walton.
Unlike many other doctor's offices, we had very little wait time.  Everything moved very quickly and I had very little wait time between appointments.

Dr. Walton wants me to loose 38 lbs before surgery, have an EKG and Sleep Study, and of course labs. I have done a lot of research on the VSG and I had little questions, but confirmed how Dr. Walton does the procedure and also asked if I'd have to drink anything yucky (I have problems with that).  He said I probably wouldn't.  Dr. Walton was patient and took the time to answer my questions and my husband's.

I took the required psychiatric testing and Dr. Keller went over the results and told me I was clear for surgery from his point of view.

I then met with Chris who is a dietitian.  She gave me a diet plan I can follow to loose the pre-op weight and I made an appt (November 19) for the diet class to teach me how to eat post op.  She also said if followed correctly, I could loose 1/2 to 1 lb per day on the diet.  We will see!

Lauren an exercise physiologist, was the last appointment of the day.  She taught me how to stretch and explained how the body burns excess fat and I was very surprised to learn that fat burns in the less intense exercise as opposed to the more strenuous-sweating, panting exercise.

So far so good.  I was really undecided if I was going to have surgery or not but after yesterday, I'm getting excited.  They are really there to help you help yourself.  They help give you the tools to succeed and no one is telling you it will be easy, but they offer the support needed to be successful.

I'm still not a fan of the actual surgery, but I feel more comfortable about the whole situation.  There's a lot of emotions involved in this process.  I have been grieving for all the special recipes that have been a part of my family for generations.  Like my Great Grandmother's egg noodles; Grandmother's corn fritters or fried pies; Mom's potato salad and German Choc cake frosting.  I felt like I might not be able to have these ladies with me anymore, I could recreate their recipes and still have a part of them.

But then it hit me: I also have the parts of them in me that caused their deaths from cancer, stroke, and heart disease.  I have a higher risk because I'm more obese than my Mom or Grandmothers were and I've got my Dad's history of diabetes and heart disease to boot!

I was raised with food at the center of our lives.  Every event, holiday, or family gathering revolved around the food and there was always way too much of it.  But I'm willing to change that because I want to be around for all the family gatherings to come!
