I was preparing today to leave for Duluth tomorrow as I was scheduled to attend the information session at St. Mary's Duluth Clinic. I was very excited about being there and finding out the next step in the process, etc. However today Jenny called from the Duluth Clinic to tell me that she had a cancellation for a "Round Robin" appointment next week and would I rather attend then. I had no idea what a "Round Robin" was, but she explained that I will still have the information session (but with only 4 people) and that the following day I will see the dietician, the weight management nurse and have my consult with the surgeon as well. So I will get 4 steps out of the way all in 2 days, back to back. Sounds good to me! The only thing they didn't have booked for those days was a psych consult, but Jenny was going to look into it and see if they could fit me in while I am down there. So while I have to make some life adjustments (work schedule, child care, etc) because of this change, it really is a change for the better and will get me closer to my goal of having the RNY surgery. I am excited to talk to the doctor and ask him about the next steps and finding out an approximate timeline for the surgery. It will certainly help me to plan for the future trips to Duluth as well. Yay!

But that is okay...I'll go through all the steps I have to go through to make this all become a reality!

I came home from work today to find my approval letter from the OHIP OOC Unit. There were actually 2 letters in the envelope - one was a copy of the letter they sent to Dr. Medlin in Duluth and the other was a copy of the letter they sent to Dr. Wyant here in Thunder Bay. The letter states that my funding is approved for either open or laparoscopic roux-en-y gastric bypass. So now I guess I wait to hear from the surgeon in Duluth!
I am very excited and as I pass each step in the process I can't wait to reach the next one! Dr. Wyant told me at our first appt that he expects the surgery will be done within 4 months of being approved. I'm not sure if that timeline is still accurate, but I sure hope it isn't any longer! March would actually be a great time to have it done. I have to travel in February for work, and I am considering a trip to Vegas in late April and so March would work out nicely. Also Spring will be arriving...a perfect time for beginning anew!
I have also been contacted by a couple of other Thunder Bay residents on the OH website who have given me great inspiration. One has also informed me of a WLS support group here in town that I would like to attend sometime. Things are definitely looking up!

Things have started to look up again. There was a cancellation at the sleep clinic and so I was fit in for a last minute appointment. The doctor there also told me that he very strongly supports and endorses gastric bypass surgery, which made me feel very good. At least I know he will not be doing anything to block OHIP approval. And it made my husband feel better about the whole thing as well. He is much more behind the surgery now that he has heard it from a couple of doctors.
Now that the sleep study has been completed and my bloodwork has been done I am hoping that it will only be another 3 - 4 weeks before I hear back from OHIP (and keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a positive response).
I don't know when I can count on having the surgery now. The local surgeon thinks about 4 months after getting the go ahead from OHIP...so maybe April - May? I hope so. I really want to have this done before Summer. When I put away my summer clothes this year, I was certain that I'd never be wearing them again. I thought that by next summer I'd be so much smaller that they wouldn't fit any more. I will be so disappointed if I have to dig out those same summer clothes again NEXT summer!
Well, trying to keep positive!
