Two More Weeks

Jan 28, 2011

I hate to start off this blog with a bit of a whine, but I am quite annoyed.

This has been a long journey for me. It started about three years ago when I was thinking of getting the lap band but found that my insurance didn't cover it. After a change in insurance, I looked into bariatric surgery again and decided that the VSG was the only option I wanted to pursue. I set the wheels in motion almost exactly one year to the day before this post, but my hopes of surgery were thwarted after exhausting my appeals. Unfortunately, my insurance company felt the sleeve was investigational, so I waited, sometimes patiently but mostly not, for them to change their stance on the sleeve. Finally, Empire BCBS changed their policy in December 2010. I immediately contacted my surgeon's office and began the process again. To my surprise, I was quickly approved and ready to go.

My surgery was scheduled for February 7, 2011. Insurance was on board, and I had satisfied all the requirements of my surgeon's office. I had arranged to switch shifts at work so that I could have the whole week off--something that is not easy for me to do since I am only part time, and I work at a library reference desk. I had arranged for childcare the day of the surgery, and my husband had asked for a couple of days off from his job. I had purchased everything for my pre-op diet and was ready to go. I had even started packing my little bag with all my stuff for the hospital. Perhaps most importantly, I was mentally prepared for surgery on the 7th.

On Monday the surgeon's office called. Something came up on the doctor's calendar, and my surgery had to be rescheduled. AAARRRRRGGGGHHHH... Now I have to wait two more weeks until February 21st!

Two. More. Weeks.
I know it doesn't sound like that much of a difference, but it was REALLY, REALLY a pain to get my work schedule rearranged. Now I have to figure out how to do it all over again after having just arranged to switch with people the week of the 7th. Plus two weeks seems like an ETERNITY to wait. Oh, BTW, did I mention that my new surgery date is MY BIRTHDAY.

I know, I know, I am so extremely lucky to have this opportunity, and everything will work out just fine. Maybe being sleeved on my birthday can even have some significance by being tied to the idea of a kind of rebirth. Yes, things could be infinitely worse, but still...two...more...weeks! Sometimes it is so hard to be patient!
