I've been yo-yo dieting since I was 10 years old (competitive gymnast).  I am barely 5' 0" tall and became officially overweight at 18 years of age and 130 lb.  Since that time, I have lost and gained several hundred pounds and this vicious cycle finally caught up with me when I hit the Big 40 this past July and reached almost 248 lb.  I've been Dx with the following, delightful co-morbidities:  severe obstructive sleep apnea, (I sleep w/a CPAP machine) pre-diabetes, hypertension and glaucoma!  My father died of a massive coronary at age 44 so the fear of dying and leaving behind my 6-year old daughter and husband finally hit me like a ton of bricks!  So I decided to research weight loss surgery here on OH and it was at that point that  I found out about the DS!  I knew in my heart of hearts that this was the right surgery for me.   After initially seeing a "bait and don't switch" surgeon who tried to talk me into the RNY, I decided to seek a second opinion and arranged for a consult with Dr. Pomp at Cornell.  He actually took me seriously and was impressed with my arsenal of research!  I love him and feel confident with his skills.  I was finally approved for surgery and the date is set for January 29, 2009!  Because of my short stature, Dr. Pomp asked me to lose 20 lb before surgery but the holidays really did me in and I've only lost 7 lb so far!!  During the day, I'm drinking mainly protein shakes, 1 protein bar and then a dinner of protein and veggies.  I've been trying to keep my carbs under 20 grams so hopefully I will lose more over the next 2 weeks!
