Home & Banded
Sep 06, 2007
I'm home now and banded one week tomorrow. I'll recap my surgery day now...
On last Thursday I had my "last supper" at the Cheesecake Factory. I waited all week for it and was kind of let down. I thought about that dangerous strawberry shortcake that I'd stayed away from for fear of ODing. For whatever reason, I got full quickly and could not think about dessert. So I resigned myself to go home and not panic about not being able to eat after midnight.
I started to get a little nervous the morning of the surgery. It seemed like every Law & Order or CSI episode was about medical malpractice the previous week. The day started off good however, the pre-op nurse Donna was a godsend, very compassionate and through. Once she finished her check-in procedure, I waited and waited because Dr. Singh had an early morning emergency that out him behind schedule. Now I get to sit almost naked, and very hungry for hours wondering what the emergency could be. My mother was there to reassure me the entire step of the way. She flew up to be with me during the procedure and has really been my guardian angel called mommie.
Two and a half hours after my procedure was scheduled to began, a resident came to inform me that they were getting ready to start on me. I'm not what my facial expression was because he immediately told me that he was not going to be the one performing my surgery, Dr Singh was on the way. I was relieved until an even younger guy came in all excited with smiles told me he would be sitting in on my surgery as well. I'm sure of my facial expression this time because he giggled and told me he was still a medical student.
I was wheeled into the OR and remember wondering if they had enough space to work. Dr. Shepard and Dr. Burke from Grey's Anatomy seemed to have much bigger ORs. :-)
I repeatedly asked for more drugs when I came to in the recovery room. They finally told me they've given me the limit, I guess the pain began to subside once I knew I had to work with what I had.
What I wasn't prepared for was not eating at all on the day of surgery. I didn't get to eat or drink anything until around 6pm on Saturday! They gave me lemony swabs to suck on which I began to cherish.
My First Dinner Revelation
Aug 10, 2007
I went to a restaurant for the first time after learning I'd been approved for surgery. I immediately dug into the hot rolls, being starved and then started on a cup of sausage soup. It hit me about half way through that I would know longer be able to eat so carelessly. I wonder if I will be able to get accustom to chewing my food thoroughly. I never noticed how I chewed before. I definitely do not want to get sick because I rushed through a meal. That was just the starters, my main course arrived and I realized that I had enough food for three people in front of me. I look forward to getting my portions under control. It’s very awakening to get confronted with bad habits I never noticed before.
