I started my wls journey about 3 years ago when my liver dr. suggested a band as a possible treatment for my fatty liver. After lots of thinking and researching I decided that what would really be best for me was a VSG.
I'm from Ontario and the surgery that OHIP covers is RnY. They will occasionally cover a VSG if you can't have an RnY. So, I spent a year going through the process in Ontario but in the end the only surgery they would offer me was RNY.
I was fortunate to be in a financial position where I was able to take matters into my own hands and make the choice to go to Mexico to Dr. Aceves for a VSG in April of 2013. I absolutely cannot say enough positive things about my experience in Mexico. Dr. Aceves and his whole team were spectacular. I have had no problems at all since surgery and have lost almost 60lbs at this point.
I started as a bit of a light weight at 215 but I was suffering fatty liver, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and mild sleep apenea. As of October 2013 my A1c is 5.2, I have normal blood pressure and my liver is improving. We're monitoring the cholesterol but it was high when I was a skinny, teenage vegetarian so I'm thinking it isn't weight related.
I'm now 1 lb from my dr goal weight of 155 (I might like to go as low as 140 but I'm not really sure) and am looking at plastics with Dr. Sauceda in Mexico in Dec.
