Its been awhile......
Oct 10, 2007
Well, its been awhile since I last posted so I thought it was time.
Its been slightly over 3 months since my surgery. I feel great. I have eaten and drank just about ANYTHING that I could before surgery without any problems. There is one food that I cannot have (I learned this after 3 failed attempts!)...ICE CREAM. Each time I dumped. I can have watermelon, but only a little of it. Besides that...anything. I have had coffee, soda (in small amounts), beef, pizza, chinese, you name it.
I was actually very surprised that I haven't had many issues and brought it up at my 2.5 month meeting with my doctor. I felt like I should be having trouble since everyone else seems to be.
I dont get that "bubble" in my pouch like I used to. Very rarely does that happen anymore. The doctor said that is because I am chewing my food like I should and stopping eating when/slightly before I am full.
I also voiced the feeling I had that on somedays I feel I never get full and am always hungry. I hate feeling hungry and always wanting to eat. The doctor said that this could be because I am eating in the AM, which I didn't do before, and so my metabolism is faster. Makes sense, but I still dont like it.
Batteling head hunger is still an issue. I am trying to now ask myself, why I ant something to eat. Is it because I am bored, etc..
Like most of those that have had this surgery, we have the "fear" that we will out eat our operation. Especially since as time goes on, we can eat more and more.
I too have this fear. How do you know if what you are eating is the "normal" portion size for someone in your case? Is a half a sandwhich too much? Should I only be able to eat a quarter of a sandwhich?
I have been doing well with my vitamins and calcium. I try to walk at least 3 times a week.
I know I did the right thing and that makes me feel good. I do have a lot more energy and for the first time in many years, feel a sense of "hope".

One month tomorrow!
Aug 01, 2007
Hi,
Tomorrow is officially one month post-op.
Things so far are going wonderfully. Not one complication!
Of course its "different" learning your new body. You are again learning how to eat, etc.. It reminds me of my two year old daughter. I think we have the same size stomach now!
I did think that I would be losing faster than I am. Its hard to know what is "normal" and what isn't.
Funny, I would have done just about anything in the past to lose 27 pounds like I have, but now things are different. I was hoping to have lost 35 pounds by now. I feel I have lost several inches though and kick myself for not taking measurements prior to surgery.
I will have some pictures uploaded soon of my incisions, etc..
I was more than happy to get my staples out 2 weeks post op! They were itchy, etc..
I haven't had any dumping syndrome (knock on wood).
I have, however, had too much to eat or drink and gotten the "lump" in my stomache. It is so uncomfortable but I find if you immediately get up and walk....anyplace, around the house, down the street, etc...it goes away quicker!
I will be in touch!
I am home!

I am now officially 4 days post op. I feel as good as expected 4 days after a major surgery. Groggy, sleepy, sore, etc.. Pain is very very minimal
For those that are wondering about the surgery experience, here you go. Surgery itself was nothing, after surgery you are so out of it, its easy
. The early evening of the surgery begins, so does the worst part. From about late afternoon on July 2nd (my surgery was at 7:30am that day), I started to feel awful
. Im not going to sugar coat it for you for the next day and a half, I felt like I was being tortured. My doc didn't allow any liquids for the first 2 days. So the day after surgery, I was so thirsty I thought I couldnt take it! The pain is very minimal when controlled, I just couldnt get over the thirsty thing!
Get up and walk! Words of wisdom
...you want to walk, even if you feel you cant, you can...belive me. You want to get everything moving
. You want to be passing gas, if you aren't you may be in some severe pain later. Gas pains are the worst! Lying down you feel good
, sitting down you feel good, walking you feel good, getting from a lying or sitting position up or visa versa, lying down after standing, is tough. I had a hard time getting comfortable which made for crappy night sleeping
, but this too gets better. Overall, so far so good. I have been home almost 24 hours and have been doing great!
Only a few hours!

It really seems sureal. All this prep work, all this anticipation and its really here. I still don't think it has hit me yet. I thought it would hit me when I had to say goodbye to my 2 year old daughter whom is sleeping at her Grammys, but even then it didn't. I bet it will hit when I am going into the OR.
I am hoping that this time next week I will be in the same spot typing to all of you about my surgery experience. Anyone who says that having surgery is the "easy way out" seriously needs to have one of those psychological evaluations they make us have! LOL
