It all started over 2 years ago when my daughter & son-in-law went through WLS (VSG) in OKC using Tony Broussard, MD, who is an excellent bariatrics surgeon. My daughter had been nagging my husband and I to have WLS, but we thought we were too old, too tired, too fat, and too set in our ways. I have been a yo-yo dieter for too many years to count!
My husband had developed numerous medical problems over the past 5 years - Diabetes II, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and hypothyroidism. Our insurance did NOT pay for WLS, so we began to research Mexico. We wanted to save money but still wanted a reputable surgeon. We also liked the idea of an all-inclusive cost. After a month or so, much to my daughter's dismay, we BOTH chose to schedule VSG surgery at the same time with Dr. Aceves in Mexicali. She thought we were going to Mexico to die! After she looked at our research and heard our thoughts, she finally agreed that we were making an excellent choice and even agreed to accompany us. He was not the cheapest surgeon, but we felt he was the best. He was definitely cheaper than the US and the pre-ops were included plus 4 nites (3 of them in the hospital). We had to pay for our air fare.
We dealt directly with Dr. Aceves' office (we did not sign up with an agency that organizes such surgeries). We filled out our pre-op information on-line, set our surgery date for June 29, sent in our deposit, and started our 2-week pre-op diet (high protein/low carb) on June 14. Even though the pre-op diet is specifically designed to shrink the liver and not necessarily to lose weight, I still lost 8# during that time. I felt “deprived” but didn't go hungry, and it was a great start to our weight loss adventure!
