Hackensack University Medical Center

"Regretfully you cannot judge a book by it's cover. My pre-op was very professional and prompt. My type and screen was the same. However, I was called the night before surgery to come in early because there was a change in my time, then got in early and had to wait even longer than the initial time for surgery. When my surgery was complete, I had to wait an extra 6 hours to get a bed, only seeing my family briefly during the period of waiting. Once in the room the care was great, the nurse assigned to my room was wonderful, and I am sure that my impressions would have remained excellent had this nurse been assigned to me for the 5 day stay. I was transferred to another room in 2 days, and I had to do the transfer of phone and TV, even though I was told that it would be taken care of. On the 4th day my hanbd with the IV in it started swelling and I reported it to the nurse and she told me that it was normal, very early in the morning of the 5th day it became necessary to remove the IV because my hand was swollen like a balloon, was very painful, and I couldn't move my fingers. I don't know why, but I went through 3 IV pumps during my stay, with a two hour wait between pump 2 and pump 3 with no fluids (I was told they needed to locate a pump. I would like to have rated this hospital excellent, and many of the personnel obviously strive for it. Sadly, there are also employees that detract from the overall performance. I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU HAVE A FAMILY MEMBER WITH YOU AS MUCH AS YOU CAN TO INSURE THAT YOU RECEIVE THE CARE THAT YOU NEED."
