Iron Infusion Today...

Jul 26, 2011

Having battled anemia most my life, it was no surprise to me that back in March when I had two ovarian cysts out, that my post surgical bleeding lead me to have dangerously low levels of iron in my blood. Having brought my HGB from 6 - 10.5 in the past 2 months, i am a week away from my DS surgery and my hemotologist would prefer that I have the iron infusion prior to having surgery to bring my levels up.

Today i go for my first of 5 treatments. I look forward to seeing an improvement in my labs. And will be certain to ask for a more elaborate workup today. Though i suspect with all the blood drawn at the hospital for my pre-admissions testing, that I may have had some of these labs completed already.

less than a week away from my DS! Yay!

The Family's here!

Jun 29, 2011

What a day! The Belgians have arrived, and so today started with my waking up at 5:30am to starting hanging with Annie and her girls. We made breakfast, sat outside on the back patio, headed to the playground, took a nice walk, all this.. before 7.30am.

Soooo not my typical day.

After I saw my husband off in the morning on his way to work, the day truly began. Lots of Xbox Kinnect dancing games, sport games, running upstairs to the "playroom" to do dances and be silly. Than the drive to Best Buy/Costco and the Bakery for fresh bread for the kids. THe kids are bored, so we head home, first stopping at the diner.

OMG, it's not even noon yet!!

Back home, for another walk, some games, some running around, and then back to finish some shopping. Off to WalMart for an inflatable pool for the girls, some Barbies for the new dollhouse in the playroom, and a few other items. Then its home to make dinner, draw up calendars of activity, give medication, clean up with girls, get them ready for bed, do the ironing, and here it is, 11pm and I have finally had a moment to myself to check email/forums.

This day has gone by in a whirlwind, and it makes me so grateful to be getting my DS in August. There is no way i'd be able to have a child of my own and keep up with this level of energy at my current weight.  Climbing on the jungle gyms trying to catch my neices just brought to light how terribly unhealthy i am. I cannot wait to lose this weight and actually run after one of them on the playground and catch them for a tickle assault!!

Just thinking of the many things I will be able to do, and how much healthier I"ll feel post surgery. I want to live again. And i want to have my own children. But most importantly, I want to be healthly enough to give them a good and active life, and lead by example.

Ovarian Cysts

Apr 10, 2011

Whilst going through the process of seeking approval from my insurance company it was discovered that I had a large ovarian cysts on both my ovaries. This put a temporary halt on my pursuit of the DS procedure, as I was told by my OB-Gyn that she may have to remove both my ovaries. The fear of being 33 years old, childless and losing both ovaries was terrifying.

Thankfully, i went for a second opinion, and found the best OB_Gyn Oncologist, Dr. Karen Houck. Who told me not only would she be able to save both my ovaries, but she'd do it laproscoptically with a robot. She truly is my savior.

I have since had this procedure, and have dealt with a few complications (my anemia is far worse than it ever was post-op) and am now back on track for getting my DS. I have all my prerequisites completed and am simply waiting for the surgery date hopefully for later this summer. I have family coming to stay in July, and was hoping to have this procedure after their visit.

I have started a daily regimine of protein shakes as i was the type of person who skipped breakfast typically. So a shake in the morning has been a major change to my routine but a good one! I am in the process of losing the 10% body weight, as I have been told it will aid in the surgery, etc.

And so now i'm ready to actively participate and learn from all the people who have walked this path before me. I have so much to learn!

Greetings...

Jan 26, 2011

I am at the beginning of my weight loss journey. I have met with and decided to use the services of Dr. Greenbaum in NJ for the duodenal switch procedure. For the next three months I must visit with various doctors, have numerous blood work done, and lose 10% of my body weight in preparation for this surgery whilst collect data for my insurance company (Horizon Direct Access Blue Cross Blue Shield) to analyze to determine whether they will cover this life saving procedure for me.

I am a 33 year old female who has been struggling with her weight most her life. There was a period in my 20s when I was thin, but it was short lived, 4-5 years max. I am married with no children, though i spoil both my cats and treat them as kids. :) I work in the travel industry and have returned to college to finish my BA thanks to a tuition reimbursement program at work. I love to read, write and create art in my spare time. Most my 'activities' are quite sedentary. I need to be more active and am looking forward to losing the weight. I display a few co-morbidities, chiefly, i am infertile due to a high production of estrogen. And i have damaged my right knee numerous times, e.g. skiing in youth, volleyball in 20s, falling down staircase in 30s, and then some. The weight has exacerbated the condition, and has restricted me to very low impact exercise which i use as an excuse to do little.

It is late in the evening, and i plan on being an avid participant on these forms as a means to keep myself in check. I have been given a diet by my General Practitioner, which I have really yet to start, and we have been eating our way through the remaining groceries. This coming Saturday will start my new way of eating, carb-free and with a concentration on protein intake.

Time for bed, as I should get some sleep even though we're caught in a snow storm, and I will be working from home tomorrow.
