I've been working toward getting gastric bypass surgery for over 3 years now. My husband had the surgery in 2003 and lost 150 lbs. I've certainly seen both the positive and negative aspects of life after gastric bypass, but I still feel that it is the best solution for me. I've been on every known diet for the last 16 years, and while I can lose some weight, it just won't stay off.
For the last 3 years, I've been in "insurance hell"! The first insurance wouldn't cover the procedure at all, the next insurance wanted 12 months of medically supervised diet with visits every 30 days - 3 months later the company changed insurance companies and wrote an exclusion no longer covering weight loss surgery! I got another job with a company that did cover the surgery at 90%, but I had to wait 6 months before I would have coverage. My coverage was supposed to go into effect at the end of December, and wouldn't you know it - they switched to BCBS and now require 6 months of doctor supervised diet.
So, that's where I am now. I've done 2 months of doctor visits, have a follow-up appointment with the surgeon next week, and a referral to a dietician later this month.
