6 Months Post-Op

Jan 15, 2010

It's been 6 months & 1 day since my surgery. I certainly feel healthier and have more stamina. Unfortunately, I've only lost 54 pounds and have been at that weight loss since before Thanksgiving.  I've succumbed to some bad habits that I had before surgery--I blame the stress of living in an almost unbearable situation.  As I write this, I realize that the people enduring earthquakes & loss of family would describe their situations as "almost unbearable" as well.  So I guess I need to rephrase that line--I need to stand up and take charge of my living situation and stop using the old "martyr" theme to use as an excuse for unhealthy living.

My initial weight loss was very good, especially when I was doing 15 min of bicycling each morning. I also went to a water aerobics class 2X a week for about a month--that was good for my knees. But one night I biked over 40 min. watching a television show and hurt my knees to the point that I was almost back to using a cane--not smart.

One positive step for the new year--I'm committed to becoming a facilitator in a church-led recovery group. We will begin a 15 week training in February and be ready to help our community with a 2-hour recovery program each week starting in August. It's a big commitment, but I've felt led to become involved.

Almost 8 weeks out--35# lighter

Sep 06, 2009

Well, I need to be back here with people who are so supportive.  I had some issues with my incisions. Three of them were infected, so the PA removed some stitches that were contributing to the problem. I've removed several more at home. The incisions are finally scab-free, so I can get back to my water-aerobics class after being out so long. I lost 30# the first 6 weeks, but my weight loss has slowed because I'm due for cortisone shots in my knees & I'm having trouble riding my bike without pain.

I didn't realize that the first 6 months were the critical weight loss period. I can continue losing after 6 months, but it slows down and then at 1 1/2 years, the weight will be very difficult to lose. So I want to lose as much as possible while I can.  I've scheduled my appt with the "knee" doctor, but I've still got a couple of weeks to wait. So I plan to start back with water aerobics this week.

My husband has been very supportive. He's taken over a lot of the household chores since my surgery. I've also been back at school for a month, so his help has really been appreciated.

Getting enough protein continues to be a problem. I plan to check out the message boards for some ideas on getting enough.

My surgery's pushed back to the 14th

Jul 02, 2009

That's great news because now I can go to see "Wicked" with my daughter. We have 5th row seats! (Hopefully, I can squeeze into one).

Very Nervous Here!

Jul 01, 2009

My surgery's set for next Tuesday, July 7th. My daughter & I have tickets for that date to see "Wicked" in Memphis. But this is the only date available until July 29th, and that's just too close to the start of school for me.  So I'm upset that I can't go to this play that we've planned for 5 months (I have 5th row seats). But I've told her that if I lose this weight, we'll make plans to go to New York next year & see the REAL Broadway production!  Meanwhile, she's going with her grandmother, aunt, & someone else to take my spot. We're still hoping that they'll have a cancellation for the 8th, 9th, or 10th at the surgical center before the doctor goes on vacation, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen.

Meanwhile, I'm pretty nervous.  Just sleeping a lot to keep from worrying. I've read quite a few posts here, and I know this is the best thing for me. Otherwise, I will be an invalid by the time I'm 60.
