day 10 post op!

Apr 16, 2011

Im day 10 post op and feel great. I have had no trouble getting in 45 grams of protein, a bit short on fluids. Not bad, though. I should do at least 64 and i usually get in around 50. I think the biggest problem is that I forget. I made it through the first week full liquids. Even going out to lunch with family for our youngest daughters 20th birthday. I brought my 7 year old granddaughter to McDonalds and didnt even want it when I was smelling it the whole time. For now, and hopefully always I just remember what it could do to for me, NOTHING! I graduated yesterday to full fluids, pureed. I had a yogurt yesteday and was so so excited! No problem with pureed soup, either. I did have cottage cheese yesterday and was full. This morning I tried scrambled eggs with skim milk and some 1/4 c. fat free cheese to boost the protein. I think I cooked them too much and had a hard time eating them. It took an hour because I had to eat them very slow. It felt like they were getting stuck or something. I had to move around, so next time I really need to cook them less.
I've been going out every day and walking around stores. Also, housework, laundry and going back and forth to the bus stop down the street twice a day are helping in my walks. I have to be careful sometimes. I was out all day yesterday and at the last store I realized that I was a bit shaky, tired and ready to rest. But, I need to walk to get going on this journey that I am so happy that I began! Not sure how to tell when to figure out weight loss. I began at 1st dr app in sept.10 at 275. at preop appt. to start 2 week diet at 270 and checked in to hospital april 6th at 250. On the day I checked out I was 264, yuk 14 lbs of fluid...as of wed. the 13th I was down to 245. So, 30 lbs less than sept. 2010 sounds good to me!! Bye, for now!

im home!

Apr 08, 2011

i've been home since last night, and feel pretty good. I think I have more discomfort than pain. I had the surgery at roger williams medical center and have to say that the experience there was great. The nurses are wonderful, from first being admitted until I was discharged. Dr. Pohl did great, and I told him that I didnt even feel as if he had done anything. Besides the five small incisions and the bruising from god knows how many heparin shots in the stomach I only really felt thegas. That was absolutely the worst part from the beginning. I felt like a baby moaning from the gas and now know how my son felt when he was so colicky. I did a lot of walking in the halls, which helped with the gas. I tried to get rid of it often, had a little success!  Besides my blood sugar being too high and blood pressure too low I had no issues. Oh, I did have one huge problem with veins that are flat and roll to get in the IV. That was horrible, I have five marks and bruises from where they tried. Thank God they found a deep one in the OR and changed the painful site from where they did it in outpatient. It did start to leak the last morning so it had to be changed. But, the nurse took her time and got me the first time. I had problems with drinking my first shake on friday. I had such pains that it doubled me over. I drank it because I had to, but hurt so bad. I got a different kind for lunch and had gas pains, but no where as bad. Thank God, because that is the only reason why I would have had to stay. I got home around dinner time last night, and had quite a bit of company. I don't mind, but I think I got too tired and almost fell asleep on them. My night went well, and I have already put coffee on and have laundry started. So, I think I am off to a great start! I'll get back to this in a few  days. Oh, the bad news is is that I gained 14 lbs in the hospital from all the fluids and I have no feeling as to when to urinate. I need to keep reminding myself to go, then its not much. This too shall pass!!

day 3!

Mar 25, 2011

I am on day 3 of my pre op diet. 3 protein shakes and one lean meal at dinner. I try to save my breakfast shake till around 8, as i am out to work by 6 am and if i drink it too early I am starving by 8..so far so good. I am having trouble figuring out if the shakes I bought(EAS) are the right ones for me. I need them to be at least 15 protein and no more than 150 cals. EAS is in that area, so I hope I am good. I did buy a mixed package from the drs office, but I have felt nauseous from a couple of them. I will keep trying, and plugging along. I think about food all the time, but i actually have will power like I have never had before! I totally look forward to dinner when I either eat a lean cuisine, etc. or salad with 3 ozs of lean protein in it..I am so excited about april 6th, but nervous about doing the right thing once i am home. Like, getting enough protein and fluids in. I never drink enough, but if i have to put protein powder in my bottle and get them both in together then I will try! Trying to get things together for my 3 day stay, then making sure that I have made arrangements for my 7 yr old granddaughter whom we have custody of. I have 3 grown children, well 30, 25 and 19 who are great, so between them and my husband Im sure she will be fine. I do find when I really want to eat something I either go on the Wii fit or on the computer to take my mind off of food. Right now i feel strong, so we shall see as time goes on. I feel positive and excited, and I have faith that this will be fine!

its getting closer!

Mar 09, 2011

I have four weeks from yesterday until my surgery! I have been on this journey since august 2010, and it is going to be soo soo worth it! I am getting worried right now about finding a protein shake to drink for the two weeks pre op, never mind after. I have been trying to drink one for breakfast every day and I a not too picky. But, the Pure Protein that I thought tasted good did NOT agree with me. I paid for it all day, not easy when I drive a school bus..time to move on to another kind. I drink it at 6 am and by 8 am i am very hungry and don't feel very well. I am a diabetic, so not sure if that has anything to do with it. I am too busy driving to do anything about it. I may try to get the ones that they sell in the drs office, as long as i can mix them with water. Milk and I don't see eye to eye!
I have spent so many hours reading and rereading all of the paper work from the surgeon, and I always find something that I missed! Today I go to the dietician for the last time before surgery. I have loads of questions for her. I think that my biggest fear, besides how my family will be able to keep things up at home is how to know what, when, how much, etc to eat and drink. I see the sample menus, and I am not a picky eater. But, i know that I will have my work cut out for me when it comes to my protein and fluids..oh well, I need to get that down befroe I go in. My wonderful dietician will hopefully lead me in the right direction! I'll be back, have to go see Diane! The dietician who has helped me so far!
