For the last year or so having WLS has been on my mind but because of being a type I diabectic I am very afraid of how having this kind of surgery would effect my diabetes. I will always need to use insulin because I was diagnosed with juvinile diabetes at the age of 11, and my pancrease does not produce any insulin at all.
I guess my biggest fear of having the WLS is not being able to treat a low blood sugar. I have excellent control of my diabetes and because of this I tend to have problems with low blood sugars. So for that last year I have been researching WLS surgery and have had no luck in finding any information regarding WLS on any type I diabectic. My MD is very supportive of the ideal of my having WLS. I also have high blood pressure and rheumatoid arthirtis, which causes pain in my hips, knees and ankles. And I know that getting rid of this weight would greatly help the pain of the rheumatoid arthritis.
If there is anyone out there at all that is a type I insulin dependent diabectic that would like to share any information I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, I finally have desided to go forward with my hopes for having WLS. I have read many books on this topic and researched so much that now when I look anything up on the internet everything I read I have already read somewhere else. The end of December I saw my family doctor he called Priority Health that same day and two days later they faxed a letter saying I was approved for their 6 month physician supervised weight loss program that is offered at Munson Medical Center before they will consider my request for bariatrics surgery. They require you to meet with a dietician 10 times, a social worker 8 times and a fitness instructor for 17 times. The total cost of the program in $2400 but my cost is only $841, so not so bad. I am hopefull that after the 6 months I will have my approval.

I went for my intake interview for MMC weight loss program. I met with the dietician, social worker and fitness expert. It was kind of like a job interview. I spent 30 min. with each and they explained their roll in the program. Their main concern is do I have the time and commitment to start this program. The first 17 weeks I meet one on one with each of them and then the last 8 weeks are group lectures and group exercise. But I CAN DO THIS and will do this. They are to get back in touch with me by the following Wednesday if I have been excepted into the program. I went and ordered a Magic Bullet which is a blender, juicer and food processor in anticipation for WLS. Yes I know, I could have waited but I just want to keep positive that I will have WLS.
