Back on the Roller Coster of Life
Jan 30, 2007
On other note, my wife decided to get back on the straight and narrow on the fitness trail. I am so proud of her for that and will do anything I can to help her out. She is doing great already and I know she will succeed .
Also, a big THANKS to those people in my new online home and favorite message and chat board (you know who you are). You guys were a big help to getting me out of my funk. All it took was a couple of rides on the short bus, some SF dark chocolate, and lot of laughing.
Current Weight: Don't care! Exercising more that ever so my weight is going up and down like crazy. I'll worry about it again in a couple of months.

Life-wise, the past two months have been just an interesting rollercoaster ride. Some things great. Some things terrible. Overall though, I don't want to get off, just find some smoother track for a little while.... then head in for the inverted drop into a double loop!
My Old Information.
Jan 08, 2007
I'm a husband and father of 2 pre-school aged children. I exercise regularly but have trouble keeping the weight off. I'm starting to look at surgical options.
05/05/05 - Well, I admit that I'm pretty bad in the past about writing updates. I'll try to do better. To update, I have completed my 6 months of medically supervised weightloss with Dr Martinsen. I didn't do very well, but I have to say that Cindy is a great Doctor. If you live in the Belpre, OH area and need a GP, I highly recommend her. My letter of recommendation is being drafted and being sent to Highmark BCBS. More when I hear back.
07/12/05 - Had my final Visit with Dr. Shin prior to surgery. My official start weight for the journey is the one from his office: 355!
He isn't happy with it and neighther am I. I've been put on a pre-surgical diet to work on that. Here we go!
08/01/05 - Okay, I'm still bad at this updating stuff. Here is where we are at. On July 18, 2005 Dr. Shin performed my gastric bypass.
To date there have been no complications. Current Weight 323lbs.
08/06/05 - I'm getting better at this "blog" thing. I started back to work this week. While I was out for two weeks for my surgery, I recieved a call from work asking if I could fill in for a construction coordinator (ie. liason between the company and the contractor) for a week when I got back. Like an idiot I said yes. Now, my friends that have been through this already told me that just working at my desk will be taxing on week 3, let alone walking several miles in the heat and dust for 10 plus hours a day. Well, today is day six of this task and I am happy to say that it is about over. Just a word of advice to anyone that reads this, if you go through with the surgery, take off as much sick time as you can get from work and your doctor. It is worth it! Current Weight 316
08/11/-5 - I am working Out of town this week. Normally I really over indulge when I am on the road. This time it isn't a problem. As a note to those travelers that are just post-op. The egg that is on the Burger King breakfast sandwich sits well for me. It is a touch on the salty side, but with the lack of sodium in my diet right now, that is a good thing! I order it with ham. Throw away the bread and munch on the egg and maybe a bite or two of the ham. So far, I can't finish the entire egg. I get full about half way through. That's fine.
This Friday I am getting on a plane to meet up with my wife and kids for a visit with my parents. I can't wait to see how the seatbelt fits. All I know about my waist size right now is that this pair of Cabelas pants I have on right now will be going up on the trader's page really soon. CURRENT WEIGHT: ?????? (will post again on Tuesday with an Updated weight)
08/16/05 - I'm back from visiting my family. The airplane ride went better then I expected. Since I had an "A" boarding pass with Southwest, I got on the plane with my choice in seating. I chose a window seat near the front. When I got into the seat, I was able to put on the belt and actually had to tighten it up! It was probably the most comfortable rides I have ever had on a plane!
The family visit was just fine. The only bad thing that happened was that while driving my wife's car home from Delaware, I was eating some sliced turkey for lunch. I had two slices out and ate them too fast. I thought I was gonne blow chunks while driving. Luckily, it passed about half an hour later. I go back to see Dr. Shin tomorrow. I think I will be released to all physical activity.
Current Weight: 309.5
08/18/05 - Met with Dr Shin's support staff yesterday. They were very pleased with my progress to date. I was released to a "Phase 4" diet and can return to physical activities.
Current Weight: 307.5
08/22/05 - This weekend I tried a new food. I found that I can tollerate grilled ground beef. This is a blessing for me because I still can't get down that fish thing. I'll keep trying, but at least I know that I can deal with a little hamburger now and again!
Current Weight: 303
08/29/05 - Busy weekend with the family. Took the wife and kids to Pittsburgh to see the Wiggles. Twice. Not a big weight loss week, but anything is good.
Current Weight: 300.5
09/05/05 - Happy Labor Day!
Current Weight: 292.5!
09/12/05 - My wife will be hosting a "Biggest Loser" party at the YMCA Tuesday night. I wish I could attend but I'm 250 miles away. She is going to be on the local NBC station's 5pm news promoing it. I really hope the DVR gets it for me! Man I am proud of her for this!
Current Weight: 286.5
09/19/05 - My wife's party was a success! I wish I could have gone, but I was 250 miles away for work...... On another, but close tanget, If you are a memeber of a YMCA that participates in the AWAY program, you have got to check out the Hagerstown, MD branch. It has to be one of the nicest fitness centers I have ever seen at a Y..... The power station I am working with for the Fall Maintenance Season is well known in the company for thier bets for different claims that people make. A weight loss challenge was laid on the lunch table. As a joke, I said I should enter even though I have an unfair advantage. They decided to let me in to add to the incentive for the winner. To be honest, it is even more of a goal for me to beat the pants off of these guys. Besides, I could really use a new Carhartt jacket.
Current Weight: 283
09/26/05 - 78 pounds as of today! 277.5 was my half-way point between my pre-op weight and the goal my doctor set of 200lbs and I am now more than Half way there.
Current Weight: 277

10/04/05 - This past weekend my wife walked more than a marathon in the New York edition of the Avon walk to raise money for breast cancer research. This is a great cause to work for and a great accomplishment for her! On to me..... This week started the "Superbowl of Weightloss" for me at work. Between that competition, the "Walktober" health initive that I have entered into with another power station and my personal gaol befor my business trip to Orland on November 13th, I have a very goal-oriented month ahead of me. I love the incentive.
Current Weight: 273
10/10/05 - Keeping on keeping on. Next week will bring my 3-month milestone from my surgery. Hoping for a big loss heading into it.
Current Weight: 268
10/17/05 - Tomorrow will be my 3-month milestone. As of yesterday morning I am at 90.5 lbs. and loving it. This past week I bought a new shirt for work. It was an XXL and not a 3X. It felt great to buy it and know it would fit. The better part was that it was a bit too big. I whent back yesterday and bought an XL. I have it on right now. It is a little smaller than I would normally want, but I like to wear my clothes that way right now. It keeps my eyes on the prize.
Current Weight: 264.5
10/24/05 - Busy one day off this week. Not restful, but I got to see the wife and kids. I'm hoping to be writing about my 100lb weight loss next week.
Current Weight: 260
10/31/05 - Yesterday I did it! I officially joined the century club. Exactly 100 pounds down from my official start weight. I am pretty happy about that. I have set a new goal for myself and that is another 15 pounds by the end of November. At my current rate, that shouldn't be a problem, but you never know.
On a different note: Saturday night was Trick or Treating in my neighborhood. Because of the age difference in my kids, and the hills in my neighborhood, it was easier to put them in the wagon and pull them. Combined, the two of them and the wagon probably weighed about 100lbs. I tell you want, I am happy not to be dragging that with me all of the time.
Current Weight: 255
11/07/05 - You know, I had been wanting to be below 250 before I take the family to Disney World after Thanksgiving. Not a problem anymore. This morning I checked my weight and it gave me the good news!
Current Weight: 249
11/21/05 - Sorry faithful readers (snort) that I didn't update last week. I left Sunday morning for a Primavera Conference and didn't get time to update before I left. Well, I didn't get in much gym time but I did do a lot of walking. I feel good and I keep on going down.
Current Weight: 241
12/07/05 - I just got back from taking my family to Disney World. Eating there was a little challenging for me, but protein bars helped out. I'll expand on this later for my faithful readers if there are any.
Current Weight: 230
12/12/05 - Due to the whirlwind I have been on these past few weeks, I took it easy on the workouts. Now that I am back home (finally) I can start using my home YMCA again. It will be nice to go back there after all this time being a guest at Hagerstown's. Not that theirs wasn't great, its just nice to be back at your own. This Thursday I will finally make it back to my Surgeon for my what was supposed to be my 3 month checkup. Instead it will be a 5 month visit. I hope they are happy with my progress. I know I am.
Current Weight: 227.5
12/16/05 - Not usual for a midweek update, but yesterday I had my followup visit with Dr. Shin and his nurse Angie. First of all, they were very happy with my progress. I've lost 130lbs since we started this journey and don't have all that much to go. Now, they want to start talking about making sure I don't find the weight again. According to Angie, 64% of the people regain a major portion of their weight loss. Huh? I've gone through way too much to even think about going back up to over 300lbs. These dietary changes are for life for me. Let other people have cake and cookies while I have a protein bar.
I just want to see 195 by the end of February, and I WILL!
Current Weight: 225
12/19/05 - I hope everyone is ready for the holidays! Christmas was always a big food holiday for me. If any of you readers have heard of Taskycake brand snackfoods, then you should know one of my favorite Christmas snacks. At this time of year, Taskycake would put out tubs of holiday shortbread cookies. A tub of them and a big glass of milk.... there would be no survivors. You can keep them.
Current Weight: 221
01/03/06 - Happy New Year!
Current Weight: 215.5
01/09/06 - I'll get back to writing more in here later.
Current Weight: 213.5
01/16/06 - As I get closer and closer to my goal weight, it seems that writing in my journal is less important to me. I want to get back in the habit. We will see.
Current Weight: 207.5
01/23/06 - Another week down. Moving closer and closer to my goal of see a 1 at the beginning of my weight.
Current Weight: 204.5
03/01/06 - For some reason the system hasn't been letting me in. Oh well. Nobody has been beating down my door to ask how I have been doing. Well, I'm now down another 14.5lbs. I am about bottomed out and I can live with that. My fat is down to 16% from a whopping 48% when I started this journey.
Current Weight: 190.0
06/20/06 - No big changes in the past 3 months. I'm just trying to maintain my place in the world.
Current Weight: 183.5
