Hi Everyone, my name is Casey and I had RNY surgery with Dr. K. Reed in Guelph, Ontario on September 25, 2007. I am from Amherstburg, Ontario and I am a Medical Receptionist at a physiotherapy clinic. I have been married for almost seven years and I have two perfect little angels - Haylie and MacKenzie who are six year old twins.
My weight problem began at the age of 7. I started to get heavy at a very young age and it just got worse as I got older. When I turned 19 I started going to bars and one night this really drunk guy came up to me and yelled at the top of his lungs "get out of my way you fat _____". I was mortified - this all went down in front of my friends and his. On that day I swore I would never go back to the bars again until I lost weight. I also wanted to lose weight to find a potential husband - I always knew I wanted to marry young and have kids right away. I went to weight watchers and lost 90lbs in 10 months. The weight fell off! I was able to keep that weight off for 3 years which was when I got pregnant for my daughters. I gained 80 lbs with their pregancy but was able to lose 50% of that weight immediately after delivery. While pregnant I come to find out that I had Graves disease which involved the thyroid and I had an overactive thyroid. One year after having my girls I was told that I had a goiter and needed to have it removed before it turned to cancer...and this is were my weight took a turn for the worse. Following radioactive iodine treatment to rid myself of the goiter I continued to gain 12lbs every six weeks which packed on 100lbs. I ballooned out so huge that my own family members didn't recognize me at family functions. I was so embarressed by this and I felt so embarrassed for my husband that I didn't go anywhere that involved his friends.
I made the decision to have to surgery two years ago when I applied for surgery in the US. I was denied. I was informed that at the time I was applying OHIP was cracking down on their approvals and I wasn't "sick enough" to have the surgery. My blood work was great and I was considered healthy. I happened to speak with someone who had the surgery through Dr. Reed and she set me up. I had my consultation in January 2007 and had my surgery Sept 2007.
Since surgery my life has been fantastic. I feel great!!! I have lost 49 lbs in six weeks and I couldn't feel better. I see the weight loss, I feel the weight loss and I have compliment after compliment which feels wonderful.
I decided to have this surgery for my family. I wanted my girls to see the "real" me! I want to go places with them and not have to hold them back because of my weight. I want to go on amusement park rides with them, bike ride, waterparks, walks, etc, etc. I also wanted this surgery because I'm young and I have so many more years to live and I want them to be great ones! My mother is diabetic with all the topings (HBP, high cholesterol, swelling, aches, pains, etc, etc) and my father has PLS a form of Lou Gehrig's disease. I know that life can be a quick one and I just want to enjoy it to the fullest as a thin person who can do anything. Most of all I just want to be healthy!!
