I grew up a middle child who never really connected with my siblings. I found my best friend food and years of that 'relationship' left me overweight and with really low self esteem.
I figured that's how my life would be: Overweight, alone and depressed.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, IBS and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). My doctor asked me if I had ever considered Gastric Bypass surgery. I honestly thought it was only for those in the three to four hundred pound range. He told me that it works for those with Morbid obesity, not just those who weighed 400lbs. The most important thing was for me to be healthy. I started looking into it and found a great place near me called MMPC. They have recently changed their name to Michigan Medical Weight Loss P.C. I loved the respect I felt from their employees, the confidence of their doctors, and the overall positive environment I encountered. After thoughts and prayers I decided to "go for it"!
That was almost 4 years ago. I have lost close to 100 pounds...it tends to still fluctuate.
I recently married my wonderful husband and we are talking (just talking) about starting a family in the next few years. I am so happy to know that my children will grow up with a healthy relationship with food. That eating is what we do to nourish our bodies not comfort ourselves. That is what makes me even more proud that I didn't wait too much longer to take control of my health!
The surgery did not only help with the weight loss, but I no longer have Diabetes, my IBS is under control and my confidence and self worth has greatly increased!! I still suffer bouts of low self esteem and will ALWAYS see myself as the 'fat girl' in any scenario (sometimes the outside doesn't always match in inside). I am just grateful for the blessings I have in my life and have chosen to focus on those as much as I can!
