Long time since my last update

Apr 09, 2012

324 lbs, BMI 42.7. Total weight loss 135 lbs. I want to get down to at least 250 lbs. 200 lbs would be best. My hanging belly (pannus) is becoming an issue. The plastic surgeon my doc recommended (Waldorf Center) is NOT user friendly. Among other things, they expect the patient to handle the insurance interface. grrrr. I suppose I have to wait until I lose more before a panniculectomy. Does anyone know a good doc for this in the PDX area?

Post surgery update

Dec 18, 2011

I had my gastric bypass surgery on November 21, 2011. The surgery went well. Recovery was much easier compared to my hernia repair in September. I've lost 25 lbs since the surgery, about a pound a day. I am now experiencing severe insomnia, which I hear is not uncommon post-op. I will bring it up with my doc at my appt this Thursday.

One month since hernia repair

Oct 08, 2011

I had laproscopic hernia repair on Sept 7. Dr. Patterson says it was large and the surgery was a difficult one. I went back to work on October 3.  The distinctive bump is gone, but my belly is just as large as it was before. My hips measured 76" before the surgery and hasn't changed.

I gained 5 lbs while in the hospital. 417 lbs going and 422 lbs three days later.  I now seem to be plateaued at 410 lbs.  I am much hungrier since the surgery. Lingering pain is limiting my physical movement.

October 20 I have the last of my six monthly checkups. After that we get approval for the bypass from the insurance company.

Hernia Surgery Tomorrow

Sep 06, 2011

It's been a long time since I last posted. As of yesterday, I am down to 417 lbs from a starting weight of 459 lbs. Dr. Patterson has decided to fix my hernia before doing the bypass.  My hernia surgery is tomorrow, Sept 7th. I am hoping the surgery will restore my center of gravity and reduce my lower back pain.

I have been searching for good walking shoes. Nothing feels right on my 12M, narrow heeled feet. New Balance, Asics, Saucony....I've tried on tons of shoes and came away with nothing.

Extremely Frustrated

Jun 18, 2011

On June 13th I had my metabolic breath test and psych evaluation. The meeting with the psychologist went well. My PA tells me my metabolism is not slow enough to warrant treatment. Today I weighed myself ...460 lbs!  That's 8 lbs UP from one week ago. All that healthy eating and exercise and I GAIN EIGHT POUNDS!!! I am really ticked. The PA says I should be having 1800 calories and 135g of protein per day. How can I lose weight eating that much? My partner tells me the 8 lbs is muscle. I don't buy it.

Metabolic Test, Psych Eval

May 30, 2011

On Thursday, the 26th, we did our MMPI tests.  Longest test I've taken since my SAT 30 years. We discuss it with the shrink on June 13. On that day we also have our metabolic tests. Not sure which test result I'm more interested in hearing. On Friday we visited with our PA for the first time. Very nice young man name Jason K.  I gained 3 pounds after one week of this high protein diet. Frustrating. Wednesday is our first PT appt. Hopefully, I will get some good excerise ideas. I can't imagine losing any weight unless I can dramatically increase my activity level. The insurance co (UHC) only asks that I don't gain weight in the next six months. The surgeon wants me to lose 50 lbs before surgery.

Introductory Appointment with OWLS

May 24, 2011

On Friday, May 20, 2011 we had our introduction to Oregon Weight Loss Surgery.  My partner, Oneta, and I are going on this journey together.  We met with the nutritionist, physical therapist and blood drawn. The nutritionist was pleased with the changes we have made in our diets already. Our insurance (UHC) requires 6 months of a monitored weight loss, so that puts our surgeries around December, if we are lucky.  May 26th we have our written evaluation with the psychologist.
