One week after
Nov 16, 2010
Well its been a week now. So many emotions thoughts have run through my noggin the last week. The surgery itself went well. It wasn't until I got to recovery the problem occurred. This is what happened.
Upon entering recovery, they nurses and medical staff removed my breathing tube and nasal tube. Put the cpap mask on and things looked good. Until I had a massive nose bleed. Thankfully the close monitoring, someone noticed that I was not getting any oxygen. Quickly the medical staff pulled the cpap mask off me and put in another breathing tube.
Apparently I woke up just after they had pulled the breathing tube out the first time. But I have no recollection of it. The only thing I remember was several medical staff around my bedside, asking me to squeeze their hand. The staff at St. Joe's hospital are amazing. I do recall waking up in and out those frightfully few mins, being scared and grabbing anyone's hand and holding on. The staff kept reassuring me that I had to keep the tube in for at least another hr. But it turned out to be 2-3 hrs. I was very groggy and sleeping allot in recovery, not knowing what time had passed. Finally the breathing tube was removed again. And my lungs started taking in the oxygen. I remained in recovery with my cpap and oxygen hooked up to the cpap machine.
Waking up ever now again, I kept asking for my partner Vikki, wondering if she would be able to come in and see me. It was now 630.
At that time, the staff and other patients in recovery were dwindling down. I woke up to the news that there was a room on the sixth floor waiting for me. So up I went to the ward, being pushed by nurses from recovery to only find that my room was not ready. So back down to recovery I went.
I layed in recovery in and out of sleep. It wasn't until 9pm that the staff allowed Vikki to come in. I could see that she was scared and happy to see my eyes smiling back at her.
Finally it happened, my room with a view was ready, at 930 I was up in my room. Groggy and only wondering what had just happened.
I guess I was in recovery for over 8hrs. I was pooped and so was Vikki.
Day two consisted of me finding out that things were pretty bad in recovery being that I was unable to breathe. I had suffered some nose/throat tears from the tubes coming in and out. I kept coughing up blood. that too was another doctor concern.
I passed the swallow test and finally I could drink small sips of water.
Day 3 was frustrating. My bladder had shut off on its own. And out of the blue, I dumped !! Even though I was on anti nausant medication, I was reaching to throw up. Oh the pain was awful. I just didn't understand why I dumped, being I have had nothing but water and apple juice. The only highlight was that I had a BM woohoo, but only pain and diarrhea to follow. :(
Day 4 Uncontrollable poops continued. Good lord tell me that this is normal. But nope things have to get weird. Into isolation I go being that there is a C Difficle outbreak. The only good thing about Day 4 was I was up and walking for 20 mins.
Day 5 I was in significant pain in the stomach. I rested in isolation
Day 6, The test for C Difficle came back negative. And I was finally coming home !!
What a unforgettable journey it's been. I'm so thankful for Vikki for all her help and the OH community for their support. As it turned out the trauma in recovery was a result of sleep apnea and the nose bleed together at once. I'm so thankful to have air in my lungs and breathing and living with my new pouch, Criky.
Cheers,
