ONE YEAR POST OP
Jul 21, 2008
Well it's now over 13 months since I had rny May 31st, 2007. I am down 70 lb since surgery, ( I was a lightweight at surgery), 130 lb from my highest weight about 4 years ago. I would still like to lose 10 lb while the window of opportunity is open over the next 5 months. I am changing up my diet and exercise program to achieve that.
The past 2 years of the wls journey has been quite a trip! From hurry up and wait, surgery, recovery, stricture and scopes, etc. there's been excitement, frustration, joy, tears, ups and downs. But I made it!
I am no longer obese! I feel like I have finally come home to myself. I'm comfortable with my reflection in the mirror. I love my body and the way it works for me for the lst time in my adult life! I am still working out with a trainer twice a week and in between on my own. I am fit and strong, also a lst for me. I can eat most things but I get dumping from sugar, for which I am thankful. I can have a taste but not a piece of desserts. I can enjoy a glass of wine but it does hit me a lot faster now. Dense foods like brocolli, wraps, tuna require attention and care, easy does it. I am truly glad I had this life giving surgery and no longer require diabetic meds. I am looking forward to the future with a newfound optimisim instead of dreading the what-ifs diabetes threatened me with.
I am grateful for the support of my family and friends and the London Weight Loss Support Group as well as the surgeon and staff at Henry Ford Health Center in Detroit. The Centurion Celebration July 8th this year at Henry Ford was like a closure to the process for me, honouring my success at weight loss. I really feel it is one the paramount achievements of my life and I am grateful for this opportunity to live life more fully from here on in.

SIX MONTHS LATER
Dec 03, 2007
Last week the nurse at the doctor's office told me I have the blood pressure of a teenager (120 over 66)! I've been off my diabetic medication since the week before surgery!!! My sugars are running under 5. So my primary goal has been accomplished.
I'm working out with a trainer twice a week and in between try to force myself downstairs where I have a treadmill, weights, ball, etc. I wish I loved to workout but I don't, but I do love the way I feel and the way my body works when I work out regularly.
I've gone from size 24 to size 16, from 260 lb in March to 176 lb today. I haven't experienced the remarkable weight loss that some others have but I am satisfied with my continuing progress. I did experience post-op stricture and was scoped three times. I still can't handle meat, chicken and fish very well but I keep trying things different ways. Last week beef cooked in a crock pot worked so that's a whole new culinary adventure. I've had to cutback on protein shakes and bars which don't sit so well right now and the sugar alcohols cause me gas problems. Thinning hair, brittle peeling nails, finding clothes that fit for a few weeks without spending a fortune are the current challenges. It's a challenging journey.

Finally There
Jun 10, 2007
There have been a few potholes along the way that delayed my journey. During that time I lost 26 lb before surgery on May 31st. I had lap rny on the Thursday and was discharged from hospital on the Saturday. After staying in an apartment on the hospital site for the weekend we drove home on the Monday.
So, I've been home almost a week and things are going well. Protein drinks, broth, jello and Crystal Lite are my menu favourites. It hasn't been difficult getting in the reqired liquid and protein since I've been home. I'm still experiencing some back pain from time to time, gas I suppose but the stomache is fine and the 7 incisions are healing well. This week I return for my 2 week check up.

Update
Feb 23, 2007
December 20th I was at the Henry Ford Center in Detroit for their orientation seminar and to meet the surgeon. My decision to take this journey was confirmed and I was told to lose 10 lbs before surgery. They were to send a request to OHIP to get approval for the surgery.
Then I waited and waited and waited. It was over six weeks until I was advised I have been approved. During the waiting time I feel I have lost my enthusiasm somewhat. I am still committed to having the surgery but there is a lack of urgency and reality for getting on with the pre-op things I need to do. My next appointments are mid and late March. So, maybe that will mean an April surgery date. I'll just have to wait some more on to find out.
I am trying to turn my mindset around. Reading the books again, getting the Magic Bullet up and running, testing the protein shakes, trying to shake some weight and get movin' more. But...it's late February and I am weary of winter and snow and cold.....

It has been absolutely amazing how much I've learned over these past 4 months as I've been researching WLS. The openess of people who have had the surgery and are willing to share their experiences and advice is awesome. My eyes have been opened to see my own situation more honestly and things I haven't really thought about before are rising to the surface and demanding my attention. What an amazing journey this is and I'm still at least 2 or 3 months from surgery, if I get all the approvals.
