3 years post op and doing well

Jan 20, 2012

I know it's been forever since I posted here. It is now January 20th, 2012 and I am 3 years post op from RNY. I weigh 154, I had gotten down to 132 at my lowest, stayed there for about a year, but it was way to small for me, looked kinda drawn, was in a size 4. 2 years post op stayed at around 140 range and felt wonderful in a 6-8.  Stayed at that weight until about 5 to 6 months ago when I began having horrific back pains. Since then my mobility has been nil, and it's showing in my weight. I have gotten up to 154 so decided to go back to protein, protein, protein. Bought a Ninja 1100 processor/juicer and am back to making protein shakes replacing breakfast and lunch and snacks. My down fall was cookies. I still didn't eat very much at meals, but due to staying in bed so much due to pain, I would be on the computer at night and was eating chips ahoy at night....every night. NOT GOOD. I found that it was the only cookie i could eat and not dump. Wish I had never found those darn things.  I gave them up 2 weeks ago, and am doing the protein shakes in place of them and will begin going back to the gym so hopefully will get back to the 140 range before long.  Other than that, found out that as with food not absorbing well (nutrients/vitamins) neither does pain pills. What used to stay in my system 5-6 hours (1 vicodin) now is completely out of my system after about 3-4 hours. Ugh. Anyhow, I KNOW what I have to do to feel better, the way I did a year and a half post op, I just have to DO IT.

5 months out, and feeling better than ever!

Jun 09, 2009

Well, it's now 5 months since my surgery and I've never felt better! I've now lost 73 lbs, and gone from a 24 to a 10!! YES A 10, I can't believe it, by goal I hope to be in a 6 or 8! I still am having trouble "seeing" myself at a size 10, the only thing that helps is to look at old pictures of myself to see the difference, I guess that will come with time.

I can eat almost anything with no problems, even had a pork rib tonight :)  Salmon is back on my list of I can eat now, I couldn't for the longest time, but now I eat it with no problems. The ONLY things I KNOW I CAN NOT tollerate is anything sugary, I stay away from all sugar, yogurt is out as well as split pea soup and chili.  I also dumped the other night on a glass of sugar free carnation instant breakfast with lactaid milk, got sick big time.  I'm just so very very happy!!

Almost 3 months post op

Apr 03, 2009

Here I am almost 3 months post op and I'm down to 189 lbs from 242, I am SO HAPPY!!  I feel great, I have so far gone from a 22/24 to a 14 in jeans, and can now wear LEVI'S AND WRANGLERS off the rack.:)

I have gone from a 3x blouse/shirt to a LARGE and couldn't be happier.  Even my feet lost weight, they've gone from a 9 to an 8. LOL

Eating isn't too bad, the only things I can not eat for sure is salmon, yogurt and SF pudding. I snack on almonds occasionally if I want something salty and fruit if I get a sweet tooth.  I still stick to 3 meals a day, still eating about 1 cup total at a meal, and 2 snacks consisting of either cheese or fruit.  Still waiting for doctors office to schedule an appt for me to have labs done, nothing scheduled since 2 weeks post op, but am feeling FANTASTIC, this is the best thing I've ever done for myself, only regret is that I didn't do it 10 years ago! :)  Looking forward to getting down another 50 lbs

23 days post op

Jan 29, 2009

I am feeling great! I have lots of energy, though still poop out after a full days moving around. I have to date lost 30 lbs YAY and feel so good. No problems with food, only 2 things I've tried so far that I won't be eating, Salmon sat too heavy and tried Jello Sugar Free chocolate pudding again and dumped again, so that's out forever!

I am almost back to my normal activities, working in the barn, messing with the horses and always on the go again, but still have another week to be able to ride again and am really looking forward to that.

My son comes home from Iraq in March, so will spend much of the month in Texas visiting with him, I can't wait to see him!  Not much else new, trying to keep up with the protein and water intake which is hard, but doing ok. Trying not to weigh but once a week which is HARD to do! LOL  Can't wait for summertime! Hoping to have 50 lbs off by then.

9 days Post OP :)

Jan 14, 2009

Feeling pretty good actually. I think I might have over done it yesterday however.  My husband was not feeling that well and had to get to the doctors in Sacramento about 50 miles away, and since I'm no longer taking any pain meds, decided I would go with him. I ended up driving as he really felt horrible. I drove to the doctors, spent an hour there with him, then we went to Cocos for lunch (I knew I could order cottage cheese) but instead ordered a cup of cream of broccoli soup. I avoided all lumps of broccoli, and ate no more than 1/4 of a cup (3 spoonfulls) and of course was full.  We then went across the street to the mall so I could buy more protein drinks at GNC, so did an awful lot of walking:). Then drove home, on the way home stopped at the feed store to buy more bags of horse feed, then to the grocery store where I spent almost an hour walking and reading lables of soups, yogurt etc. So, left at 11 and got home at 7.  By the time we got home, I had pains under my breast bone dead center, not bad, just kind of a little sharp pain. Decided I'd take some pain meds and go right to bed, uh oh, then remembered I had dinner to eat, water to drink and some more protein to take. So, had 2 spoons cottage cheese and 42 gm protein bullet mixed with crystal light.  I was in bed by 8:30 and have been taking it easy today. I guess I have to learn that just because on the outside I'm healing well, and the fact that I'm feeling GREAT, I STILL HAD MAJOR SURGERY 9 days ago and need to NOT over due it.

Oh, and to date I weigh 220 lbs. I am so thrilled. 16 days ago I weighed 242, and since surgery I have lost 15 lbs in 9 days. How wonderful is that!! So far, this is the best decision I've ever made.

Surgery went well

Jan 08, 2009

Well, all my fears were laid to rest. Surgery went well, and am home now 2 days post op.  Surgery was preformed at noon on Monday the 5th. It was kind of funny, the nurse said she put some sleepy juice in my IV, next thing I know, I'm waking up in my room after surgery! No real problems at all, walked within hours of surgery and came home 2 days after Surgery. Today I was able to walk out to my barn to see my horses which really made me feel great, as my animals are very much a part of my healing.  I have 5 little areas that have the steri strips across them. I did have some bleeding from 2 of them while in the hospital, but no problems today.  I do have heartburn though, which I thought is strange. I had 1/4 cup orange yogurt for breakfast and have been sipping my water, took my medications and vitamins then laid down. Maybe I laid down too soon after the vitamins and meds. The heartburn is horrible. Other than that, doing great and am looking forward to watching the scales get smaller.:)

My WLS is scheduled for 1-05-09

Jan 02, 2009

Hi. My name is Jan and I live in Northern California. I am a 51 year old woman, married with 5 children and 4 (soon to be 5) Grandchildren. My husband and I live on a small horse ranch, which is our passion.  We have 4 dogs, 5 cats, 2 pot bellied pigs, 5 goats, 3 sheep, a mini horse, a mini mule, 5 Quarter horses, 3 Tennessee Walking horses, 1 Paint horse and 2 Arabian horses.

I have always been overweight.  I am a very active person, and have always been, but have been fighting weight my entire life, no matter how active I am.  I have sleep apnea and a BMI of 42.  I belong to Kaiser and because of the Sleep apnea and the high BMI, they decided last year they'd approve the WLS for me.  It has been a very long year of tests, classes, appointments and such, and the day is finally approaching.  I am nervous. I am scared, but I am also very excited to finally see an end to the constant Yo-Yo dieting.  My surgery is scheduled for 10 am on Monday 1-05-09 in South San Francisco.

My current weight is 238, but I have been as high as 250.  I hope to get down to 150, though Kaiser said I should be about 120 in a year, I can't see losing that much weight, as I haven't been that low since grade school.  Wish me luck. I will update the blog as time goes on. :)
