I am a Pre-Op going through the approval process to have the DS. I am 49 y/o M living in South Florida. I weigh in at 321 lbs and am 6'3". This puts me at a BMI of right at 40. I have several co-morbids including New Onset Type II Diabetes, Hypertension since 1999, Hyperlipidemia, Hypertriglyceridemia, GERD and Arthritis in my weight bearing joints. I am currently a Captain with a large fire department here in South Florida and have been on the job for just over 25 years. I am married going on 10 years. My wife is a post-op RNY Gastric Patient for just over 2 years now and has had GREAT success. I recently had my consult with Dr. Gagner in Miami and am tentatively scheduled for Lap DS in November. It will likely not happen until after the first of the year as my Health Insurance has a defined benefit for WLS but limit it to LapBand and Gastric Bypass. I have spoken to my insurance board and convinced them to add the DS but it won't be until after January when it takes effect. I chose the DS because of #1 the resolve of diabetes has a higher percentage rate in the DS vs the RNY, #2 because of the more normal meal size compared to the RNY #3 because Dr. Gagner recently moved here (south Florida) from NY.
I have done alot of research for the DS which has included this board and a couple of others. I look forward to getting to know all of you and look forward to the support that goes along with such a focused group of people.
