My name is Barry Little, I am 25 years old and from watertown, MA. My whole life I have been someone that has been looked down upon because I was always the largest person among my peers. All throughout my schooling I have been always knocked down because of my weight and after many years of this I decided to change that. A few years back I had started to try to do traditional weightloss methods such as going to the gym, eating right, and other things to burn calories and loose weight. As we all might now, diets don't work, and sometimes it is hard to be at the gym because of the weight and often didn't have time.
For many years I have heard and looked into bariatric surgery, and just last year I made a decision that I would change my life for the better and actually go for it.
After a 6 month program with my heath insurance company(which is my employer) and through the surgeons program, I finally had the surgery done on June 18th 2008.
Before surgery it was a long road, I was a smoker for many years and loved to eat just about anything in sight. My problem through the beginning part of this process was quiting smoking and trying to eat right. I decided to quit smoking one month before I actually met with the nutrition provider that is at my surgeons office and went through both of the programs required for surgery. At the end of the 6 months I met with the surgeon for the first time and he actually denied me because I had gained weight because of quitting smoking.
The day he denied me I was 5'8" and 425, he gave me one month to make a change and put me on a liquid diet and told me to hit the gym. After that one month, I dropped my weight to 395 and he approved me for surgery.
As I said earlier, I had surgery done on 06/18/2008 and as of 07/09/2008 I am 361.
This has been a long journey and now that the first part is finally complete, I can start on my road to a healthier life.
