I started my WLS journey 7 years ago, when my ex-boyfriend was having a DS.  I sat and watched as he lost 250 pounds.  I was amazed!!  I then went to an information session and began the process with St. Paul Surgeons.  I then hit a major snag= in May of 2003 I was diagnosed with stage 2C ovarian cancer.  I went through 2 major abdominal surgeries, suffering from major wound infections with each and 6 rounds of chemo.  I was then told that W:S was out for at least 5 years.
I started the process of getting my approval in Feb 2007- had to go back to square 1.  Then last summer I had an infection called osteomylitis in my foot which we resulted in 3 surgeries and 4 months of IV anti-biotics- there goes the WLS again.  I stayed with the bariatric psychologist's support group and geared up for this year.  I am glad I waited  because I felt more prepared for surgery and what was to come afterwards.  My awesome surgeon, Dr. Peter Kelly, did a great job of doing my RNY laparascopically so I didn't need to worry about wound infection.  I am looking forward to my new life!!

I am amazed at what has happened in the last 5 months!  I have lost 91 pounds and work out at a clinical gym 6 times per week and am actually liking it!  I had surgery on 12/22/08 to remove the right side of my thyroid and a 1" tumor.  I came home on the 23rd thinking the tumor was benign and was informed today that it was cancerous.  I will be going back to the hospital on the 30th to have the rest of my thyroid removed and to plan for the necessary treatment.  I am hoping that the hypothyroidism necessary for treatment will not affect my weightloss.  I am looking at this as just another bump in my road to a healthier life.

I had my 6 month check up with my surgeon and endocrinologist  in the last 2 weeks.  The only vitamin deficiency I had was B1- which is easily resolved.  The best news came from the endocrinologist- I am now off of all High blood pressure medications, all high cholesterol medications and down to 1 capsule of Neurontin (for neuropathy pain), happy pills, and hormones.  My insulin requirement has dropped to 10 units of Lantus per day and there are thoughts of being off of it completely in the next 3 months.  Simply amazing to me!!!  I am now waiting to have the radiation treatment to finish off any remaining thyroid tissue.  Thankfully they are not making me stay hypothyroid for too long at all.  My challenge to myself for the next 6 months is to become more social and learn how to spend time out in public with people.  We shall see how it goes.
