June-2006 (surgery month)
June 3, 2006-Saturday
Well, hello! Sorry I havn't checked in for a while. Once I got my surgery date I also got about 8 appointments and everything went rolling from there. I just finished my sleep study this morning. The tech had to wake me up half way through the night to put the c-pap machine on me. It was really wierd when I first put it on, all this air blowing into my nose! Once I got used to it, it didn't seem like anything. I just had a hard time sleeping because I had this thing strapped around my head and something on my nose. I guess i'd better get used to it since I'll be bringing one home with me. The tech and I hit it off right away, turns out he was from Pryor as well! They woke me up a 5:30 am so I ended up taking a catch-up nap a while ago. I also splurged and got some Krispy Kreme doughnuts, I figured it was a last farewell to them! Okay, more for later!
June 11, 2006-Sunday
Like I said before, things have been pretty hectic around here with all my appointments! Since the last post I've had 3 more appointments. I'll try to put down what I can remember....on the 6th, I had my chemical stress test. It turned out to not be as scary as it sounds. When I first got there they put and IV in and put some kind of dye in. I then laid down on a table and this round thing went around my chest taking x-rays. Then I went to another room and changed into a gown but was allowed to keep clothing on from the waist down. I laid down on a table and they shot the chemicals into my IV. She told me that some people get strong headaches or nausea from this but thankfully it didn't happen to me. She kept track of my pulse and BP. After about 5 minutes she gave me another shot to reverse the effects, this made my whole face tingle for a few seconds but that was that. Then I went back in and laid on the x-ray table and had more pictures done. After that I was done! The whole process took about 2 hours and they told me it would take 4!
On the 8th I went in and had my Pulmonary function test and arterial blood gas test. Very simple, for the PFT I had to blow into a breathing apparatus for a few different ways and for the ABG They drew blood from my wrist. (right where the pulse is) This didn't hurt at all because the needle was so small, but later that evening my wrist was sore.
On the 9th I had my EGD done. I was really scared and nervous for this but they gave me the happy juice and I took a nice nap and never felt a thing! The whole process took about 15 minutes but I felt like I had a full nights sleep! Nice! I felt kinda weird for the next 3 or 4 hours but after that everything was fine!
And finally today, Sunday, I'm starting my pre-op diet which basically consist of taking my protein and eating low fat meals and low to no sugar. So far so good!
June 12, 2006-Monday
Today I went to the Cardiologist to find out my results. He said my heart was big but it was because I was obese. He said I had a leaky valve but that it would correct itself with my weightloss. Overall he said he highly recommended this surgery for me and the he didn't forsee any complications.(heartwise)
Later I went to the nutrition class, It was very informative even though I learned alot of it from this website already! We to a tour of the bariatric floor, very impressive, everything was geared to big people!
This evening I went to a support group meeting, it was my first. Guess what? It was their expo night instead of a real group meeting! The good thing is, I got to meet some of the local venders and I got alot of samples! I guess I'll have to go to the next one after surgery.
June 13, 2006-Tuesday
Today I went and got my CPAP machine. It's so small and quiet. I chose a nasal pillows mask. It's not really a mask, it sits under your nose and has these really soft nobs that press on your nose openings. I think it is much more comfortable than the mask they put on me during my sleep study.
June 14, 2006-Wednesday
The CPAP machine worked really well. I woke up sometime in the middle of the night and took it off, I realized it was on the floor next to my bed so I put it on again. I woke up this moring feeling really refreshed though!
Today I went for my pre-op testings which wasn't half as bad as i thought. Then I walked to another building for the pulmonologist. He was a funny man though he was pretty obese himself. He said my lungs looked great and gave me clearence for surgery.
Then I went back over to the main hospital for my health history and physical. I met with one of my surgeons, Dr. Kirk. He's such a nice man, you can really tell he cares about his patients. We had a good talk and he told me what to expect on surgery day and answered my questions. He also told me that he prayed before he went to each surgery, that really meant alot to me!
June 16, 2006-Friday
Dr. Gorospe's office called today and gave me my surgery time! I guess I will be the first surgery of the day, My time is for 7 am and I have to be their at 5! NOW IT SEEMS REAL! Okay my stomache is upset...
June 17, 2006-Saturday
Good morning, I'm starting my liquid diet today! I post more later to let you know if I'm starving or not!
June 19, 2006-Monday
So far so good...liquid diet is alright except I have to go to the bathroom every hour! Just two more days!
Today I had my Vena Cava Filter put in. It wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. We were supposed to be their at 7:30 am. and the procedure was supposed to be at 9am. Well, turns out their were a few emergencies and everyone got bumped back. Sooo, I didn't get to go in until 12:30! Once I got in their they asked me to scoot from the bed onto the table and then began prepping me. It was so cold so it was nice when they covered me with warm blankets. Then they put draping over me with my head turned to the right. I couldn't see anything that was going on around my neck, just feel it. They look with an ultrasound to find the arterie and then cleaned and prepped my neck. Then they called my surgeon in and he gave me a shot to numb the whole area...Well let me tell you it hurt like heck! But once it was numb, I never anymore pain just tugging. It was all over in about 15 minutes and then they had to clean me up and get me back on the bed. They usually give patient a happy drug in their IV's but they never did with me because she said it went so smoothly and quickly that I did'nt need one. They also said that I was the happiest patient that they had all morning. I guess that speaks well of my sunny disposition. I'm not looking to have the worst experience of my life, I want nothing but the best!
June 27, 2006-Tuesday
Well, As you can guess I went through surgery just fine. I got to the hospital at 5am and went into surgery at 7am but unfortunatly they had some trouble with my IV and had to find another vein. (did I mention that it's hard to find a vein on me?) Well, needless to say it delayed my surgery about 30 minutes, not to mention I woke up with about 10 bruises from needle sticks! All together my husband said that it took about 5 hours before they put me in my room and he could see me. I kind of remember that but everything is a little blurry. I was in and out of sleep that evening but I was finally allowed to get up and walk around 8:30 pm. It was a breeze! The pain meds were perfect and I rarely felt any aches. I walked as often as I could and I ended up getting to come home the next day around 5 pm. Since then I've been focusing on my recovery by getting in all my fluids in and walking in the evening when it cools down some. I didn't realize what a full time job it would be to work in all the fluids. If I drink to much my pouch lets me know by aching, then I have to wait a few minutes and start sipping again.
Did I tell how great my husband has been through all of this? He has done all the house work and cooking for him and our 3 year old plus works a full time job! He's just become such and inspiration to me and I love him and respect him on a whole new level. I can't wait to get thin and healthy for my family, I'm always the one that slows us down because I get tired to easy and have to rest. But soon, the tables will turn!
I have my two week check up on July 7 so I'll post my weightloss progress then! Hopefully I'll be shocked and amazed!

I had my 6-week check up today! I'm down another 23 pounds, bringing my total so far to 49 pounds! Yayyy!!!!!! My protein was a little under average so he said to up it by 10 grams per day. I knew that was coming because I get tired of drinking my shakes and somedays I skip them. But other than that, I feel great. I havn't had much trouble at all accept for getting my daily walking in. It's been so hard here lately because of our 100+ heat. I can't wait for fall! It's my favorite time of year!
August 28, 2006-Monday
Today I went for my yearly womens appointment. My family was so excited to know how much I had lost this time but I wasn't because I didn't feel like I had hardly lost any weight. Well, guess what? I did, eleven more pounds to be exact! Yayy for mee! This brings my total weightloss (so far!) to 60 pounds!!!!!!!!!! It made my day. Oh yeah, I also got my very overdue B-12 shot...extra energy on top of it all!

Hello all, This is James, Angel's Hubby. I was in here updating the fonts for Angel's blog and thought I would spoil the fun. Angel's checkup went great and she has lost a total of 26 pounds so far. I know she'll give you more info but her face is already starting to slim down. Her belly is noticably leaving and her clothes are already starting to get loose. I think its great and shes full of so much energy.
July 5, 2006-Wednesday
Today was my two week surgiversary and also the day I start my soft/puree foods! My first soft food I tried was a soft scrambled egg with fat-free shredded cheddar sprinkled on top. Oh Boy!!! It tasted like the best thing in the world! Then for lunch I made my family some salisbury steak and mashed potatoes and gravy. So I had mashed potatoes. They were so excellent! And then for supper I had my protein shake of course. I've had no trouble getting in all my liquids, thank goodness!
July 7, 2006-Friday
Today I had my two week check-up appointment. I lost a total of 26 Pounds!!!!!!! I couldn't believe it. My doctor said I'm doing great and I've had no problems at all. My next appointment is in 1 month.
July 8, 2006-Saturday
I went swimming today! At our last group meeting our doctor said to wait at least two weeks. I still have two incisions that have scabs, so for extra safety I put waterproof bandages on all of them. They worked great! I swam for at least an hour and a half. I swam back and forth with my daughter so I think I got some good exercise.
