8-9-06 Dr. Bauman's office has submitted the letter for prior approval yesterday. Now I am just waiting to hear.

8-16-06 The Dr. office called today and informed me that the surgery has been approved. YAH I am so excited. Now a little about my journey to get to this point. January 1, 2005 I made up my mine that I was going to lose weight no matter what. I learn how to do behavior modification my working with folks with developmental disabilities, so I implemented the same principals to my weight lose process. I wrote goal and objectives, implemented the plan and kept data on the progress. I took a nutrition class sponsored by the local hospital and learned portion control and how to count calories. I lost 15 pound in 4 months. After the class was over I joined Weight Watcher for the support. I went to Weight Watcher for 16 weeks and didn't lose any weight dispite following the plan to the letter. During the time I was going to Weight Watchers I joined the gym and had a personal trainer set me up with a program and found a work out partner. From April 2005 to today I would lose 8 pounds over a 4 week period and then overnight gain 8 pound for no apprent reason. My diet had not changed in the 24 hours it took to gain 8 pounds. I went to my PCP and he couldn't find a reason why my weight lose efforts were not working. The Endocrinologist believed the reason could be insulin resistance and Medibolic syndrom. About the 6 times I regain the same 8 pounds I had had enough. I knew with all my heart that this body wasn't going to cooperate with me. I have a friend at church who had WLS and I decided that WLS was the only solution for me at this point. So I made an appointment with Dr. Bauman's office a couple of months out, and scheduled appointment for all the test that needed to be done. By the time I had my consultation with Dr. Bauman all the appointment were complete and just need to wait for the Psy evaluation to be written and submitted. The following week after my appointment with Dr. B. all the reports were submitted and his office submitted the medical report to the insurance company for approval. 7 days later the surgery was approved and I have a surgery date of September 13, 2006 at 7:30 am. I am so excited. My pre-op appointment is Aug 30th. By for now. Ann

8-20-06 I have been sharing my decision to have WLC with family and friends and everyone is very supportive. On Monday, I will share with my co-workers at the Monday morning staff meeting. I work with 7 other people. I am planning a little celebration. I am bringing a fresh fruit salad to celebrate with. Since I have heard the news I was approved and have a surgery date, I have been eating the food that I won't be eating for quite a while or ever again. So far I have had a steak dinner, went to a salad bar and enjoyed to fresh vegetable and Monday I will have a fresh fruit salad. I have a friends who make great smoked chicken and southern potato salad. I have asked them if they would smoke me some chicken before the surgery. I am looking forward to it. I am excited about the surgery and nerves at the same time. Ann

8-22-06 I have been telling people about my upcoming surgery. The reaction has been positive so far. Some people want to start giving diet advice and I interupt and tell them been there done that, but thank you anyway. One of my biggest fears right now is that I willl have the surgery and not lose weight. I couldn't handle that. Ann

8-30-06 I met with Dr. Baumann for pre-op visit and received Dr. Orders. I lost 6 pounds in 35 days. The visit went well. Then I went to the hospital and met with Anestegolist. He was very nice and all went well. They didn't have a copy of the last EKG, so I need to contact the PCP office and have them fax it over. I am excited. Now I can concentrate on getting things in line at work to be gone for 2.5 weeks. Ann

9-5-06 Eight days to the losing side and I can't weight. I went to a support group tonight faciliated by my Nut. It was great. I learned so much. She shared about a new product called Profect. It has 25 grams of Protein in 2.7 oz of liquid. Sound great it I have problems getting the protein in. It cost $11.95 for 4 tubes. Website is www.protica.com. Counting the days Ann

9-15-06 I am two days post op and doing great. I just got home for the hospital and washed my hair. It was so greasy from not washing it for two days. I had an allergic reaction to morphine and the other pain machine was very strong and I could bearly funciton. They change me to a pill and I am going great now. As the were wheeling me to the OR I starting asking myself what am I doing. But quickly answered my own question. Diet and Exercise didn't work. WLS was the only way. Ann

9-20-06 It has been a few days since updating because I have family staying with me to help me. It is 7 days post op and I have lost 15 pounds. I am feeling dizzy and have headachs a lot but other than that everything is going great. I do get tried just doing little things those, but that to be exspected because my insides have been re-arranged. Ann

9-23-06 I was taking Centrum liquid multi-vit. and it was causing dumping. It has 5 grams of sugar. That is off my list. My father and stepmother are leaving Monday to go back to Maine. I love them both, but they are getting on my nerves. Dad keeps giving diet advise. If he knows so much about dieting why doesn't he put it into action and lose the 100 pounds he needs to lose. I try to tell him but he just keeps talking and doesn't even know that sound is leaving my month. Two more days and they go back. Oh yah, 10 days post op and I have lost 17 pounds! Ann

9-27-06 I met with the nut. today and I have lost 20 pounds since surgery. She was very pleased. I finally learned how much weight lose to aim for each month. I need to aim to lose 10 pounds per month. I am also finished with the 14 day liquid diet. I am so glad that was hard to do. Now I can have pureed food. It need to be the consistance of applesauce. Yah! Real food at last. I went to the store and bought some salmon and microwaved a piece for 3 minutes and then puree it. I also bought some herbs and spices to put on the meat that I cook. The salmon was heavenly. I have a small 2 cup processor and it is just the right size to the portion I will be eating. I also learned today that 1/4 cup = 2 oz and 1/8 cup = 1 oz. That will make measuring so much easier. The hardest thing for me right now will be remembering to eat every 2 - 3 hours. I am used to eating 3 times a day and that is it, no snacking. Now I have to learn to eat 6 times a day. That will be a challenege. Ann

10-6-06 This was my first week back to work and it went well. Monday & Tuesday I didn't have any energy in the morning and about 2pm I started to feel like myself. I decided to change my eating schedule some. I used to get up go for a walk, get ready for work and then eat (two hours after I got up). Now I eat 2 oz of protein when I get up, go for a walk, get ready for work and then have another 2 oz of protein before going to work. The two meals are about 2.5 hours apart. By the time I arrived at work I felt fine.
I have decided to only weight myself on Sunday morning. It is hard not weighting everyday, because I keep fearing that the work I am doing isn't working and I won't lose pounds or inches. I know if I do what I am suppose to do, I will lose weight. I just have to believe it.
I spoke to a friend of mine who is a councilor and asked her advise on how I can change my body image. Her advise is keep acknowledging the facts. When my clothes become to big or I can fit into smaller clothes, consciously asknowledge the fact that I am losing.
I have taken before pictures and will take my picture the 13th of each month and compare the pictures. I measured myself prior to surgery and will measure myself once a month. This will help be asknowledge the facts. I have a ruby ring that I put away 4 years ago because it was too tight. I can now wear it. I have slacks that I haven't worn in 4 years and I can wear them now. They are a little tight when I sit down but they fit. Yah!!!. Ann

10-7-06 Celebrating. Last night I went through my closet in my bedroom and tried on all the clothes. They were all to big. YAH!!!!! I had a closet full of clothes that I put away 5 years ago in hopes that I could wear them again. They all fit. I feel like I have a whole new wardrobe. I am so excited to to wear the clothes again. I have BCBS PPO a self insurer plan. The policy stated Gastric BY pass surgery is covered medical review. I jumped throught the hoops to get the medical test done and my Surgereon office submitted the paper work for prior approval. The paper work was submitted on 8-9-06 and I was approved 8-16-06. I believe it was approved quickly and without trouble because my doctor office submitted the information in the format the insurance company likes. Also, I had enough comorbidities dx to justify the surgery.
