I just got out of school for the summer, so now I can devote more of my time to conversing with others and sharing my experiences. I work at a year-round school and we start back to work on August 1. That is why I am so anxious to have the surgery before the 2nd of August.
I felt better after reading that others have had problems with the scheduling of their surgeries. I had my initial consultation with Dr. Bistolarides on February 24,2001. He was very professional and explained the procedure well, answering my many questions without hesitation. When I left the BTC, I was told that I would be hearing from them in a few weeks. As time went on, I called to see why I hadn't heard anything. Kim Sloan told me that she would call that week and I would be hearing from her. Since I didn't hear, I called again the next week, only to find out that she didn't know anything yet. I then received a letter in the mail asking for my doctor to give the insurance company a bit more information. I finally received approval on May 16, 2001. Was I ever excited, for now I could schedule my surgery! Wrong! I now would have to wait a couple of weeks for BTC to call me back. I was patient for two weeks, but then I became annoyed. I called Holli, the person who would do my schedule, but she informed me that she could do nothing until everything was approved by the doctor. Thus, I was in contact with Verdinia, the nurse for Dr. Bistolarides. She was rather rude on the phone the first time I spoke to her. I finally learned that they were waiting for a letter of clearance from my doctor. My internist had the results from my tests so he wrote a clearance letter. Again, no one called to tell me that it was unacceptable; the letter had to come directly from the cardiologist. The cardiologist faxed the clearance letter to BTC, but once again when I called, Verdinia said that she had not received it. I had also personally faxed a clearance letter from the pulmonary specialist and she said that she did not receive that either. She said that they have different fax numbers and I must have used the incorrect one. When I told her that it was the number I was given by them, she said that I would just have to do it over again because they did not have the two faxes. Finally, June 6 was the day when Verdinia said that she had all of the information she needed. Now I would have to wait until the next week for Dr. Bistolarides to approve it. Well, of course, the next week the doctor happened to be out so he couldn't review my records. One of the most frustrating things about all of this was that every time I called the BTC, I would be connected to voice mail and would have to wait for the person to call me back. A very kind and understanding lady named Emma called me on June 15 to say they she was very sorry about all of the problems I was having in trying to get the surgery scheduled. She promised me that it would not just sit on her desk and that I would be taken care of the first of the week. Finally, June 19, I have a date set for surgery on August 2. It is later than I had hoped, for now I will have to miss the first few weeks of school. However, I was told that I can be on a waiting list and possibly have the surgery sooner. My pre-op visit is scheduled for Friday, June 22, 2001, at 7:00 A.M.

I wasn't exactly certain as to what to expect from this visit. I had blood work done, a chest x-ray, gall bladder ultrasound, and pulmonary function test. Met with the dietition who explained what I would be eating the first six weeks; she was very sweet and informative. Then I met with the internist who works with Dr. B. Her name is Dr. Jeffers, a very soft-spoken, kind, and thorough lady. However, I left in tears, for now she said that I have to have two more tests done before the surgery. Because I have been taking iron for three weeks, there could be a reason for my iron deficiency, even though it is now normal. Dr. Jeffers said that they must rule out cancer or internal bleeding so I have to have a colonoscopy and another test in which a tube is inserted down the throat to view the stomach. I feel very discouraged and that this is never going to end. Anyway, I made an appointment now with another doctor for tomorrow and hopefully I can have these two tests done soon. I dread the one! I will keep you all updated as I get closer to my surgery date. In the meantime, I stopped taking my Celebrex for arthritis, and my knees are so painful that I am having problems walking.
