Memphis Regional Medical Center (The Med)

"The hospital is the best trauma center in the Mid-South, but does not enjoy a good reputation in the community for the rest of the hospital. For that reason I was hesitant about the tummy tuck surgery being performed, that and the fact they are not in-network for my insurance. (I still don't know how much I will end up owing them, but the initial bill was $26K for the hospital alone.) Fortunately there was room in the bariatric suite, and I was moved there after my recovery. The rooms were all set up to accomodate larger persons, larger beds, etc. The nursing staff was extremely sensitive to the patient's needs, and I never lacked for any care... the patient to nurse ratio was so low, if I rang for help, they were there immediately. They always had a smile on their face for me, no matter how trivial my needs were to them. The dietician dept. needed help in understanding the diet needs of a post-op WLS patient... I was constantly served items with sugar, and had to request sugar substitute every meal. I got to where I squirreled them away. If only all hospitals were this good, and IF ONLY the whole Med Center was this good! I rate this as the best hospital stay I have EVER had!!!"

Lloyd Hiler

"Dr. Hiler and Dr. Cowan performed my surgery, but I never saw Dr. Cowan after the initial office visit. I consider Dr. Hiler to be my surgeon. He was the only physician I saw in the hospital and since. He has a wonderful bedside manner, and has been very supportive all along the way since the surgery. He will be performing the tummy tuck and hernia repair as well, and I am very happy to be in his care. If I had any complaint EVER, it would be that Dr. Hiler was so busy, that his office hours were never on time and you would wait all afternoon for an appointment. That has changed since Dr. Medan has joined him. He is now performing all his surgeries at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, in a special bariatric suite set up just for him and his associate, Dr. Medan, who performs the laproscopic surgeries now. (Not available when I had my surgery.) I am told the nursing staff at the Med was hand picked by Dr. Hiler and trained on how to deal with the issues obese patients face in the hospital. His office staff has been very helpful, and in fact helped me with the insurance side of things a great deal. While I made a pest of myself, they were very patient listening to my fears and concerns... and that was great. "

Herminio Balderama

"I asked Dr. Balderama to refer me to a bariatric surgeon, and he gave me Dr. Cowan. He wasn't sure of the procedure, but supported me all the way with the surgery."

Baptist East Hospital

"There were some very good nurses, and there was one totally incompetent nurse who happened to be my nurse when I was discharged. She didn't know how to do anything, didn't seem sympathetic to my need for a pain shot, and should have been retired a long time ago. I hope no one ever has to be her patient again. We didn't see her around when my husband had his surgery a few months later."
