William Sweet

"It is Dr. Sweet's policy to meet with the nurse on your first appt. On Jan. 2, I met with Dr. Sweet's nurse. That went well, and I was given a prescription to have an H-pylori test done. I was able to have it done at my local hospital, as I live 2 hours away. I was also given my second appointment(Jan. 12)which was with Dr. Sweet. When I arrived and checked in with the receptionist, she informed me that Dr. Sweet was still in surgery, and that he would be there at 2:00, which was only a half hour away. At 2:00, he came out into the waiting room, extended his hand, introduced himself, and apologized for being late. I was impressed! I was a little nervous at first, but became comfortable with him soon after. I feel certain that I have made the best possible choice in a surgeon. He has a lot of experience, having done well over 400 surgeries. He does 6 surgeries weekly, and is very knowledgable. He explained everything very thoroughly, including the different types of surgeries, which one he does, and why he feels it is best. He also suggested that I should try to lose some weight before my surgery. This is one aspect of the process that I don't agree with. I mean, if I could just lose it on my own without the surgery, why have it? Then again, he only talks about losing 5-10% of my weight, about 13-27 pounds. However, I have been struggling with this. I understand that it is not healthy to gorge ourselves while waiting for the surgery, and maybe he could suggest that he doesn't want us to GAIN any weight before. But I am going to try to lose some. His aftercare program is very good. He has support group meetings, and an "angel" network of former local patients that will visit you while in the hospital and give you moral support. This is, of course, optional. I tend to be outgoing, and I feel that for me, it will be a godsend. I was given the opportunity to ask questions. When we were done, I was given my surgery date. I will cross over to the other side on March 13, 2001. "
