This is Bob's son, Tom. Since his original surgery on September 4, 2001, he has experienced numerous setbacks, to which we have not been given any satisfactory explanation.
He has been taken back by ambulance twice and re-admitted 3 times, most recently after briefly falling unconscious. He has spent 22 of the past 31 days in the hospital (excluding the original surgery) with GI bleeding, low blood pressure, rapid pulse (130+), dehydration, an obstructed bowel that required resectioning, a pulmonary embolism due to a blood clot and had an IVC filter inserted to guard against future clots.
On behalf of his family, we appreciate everyone's thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement to and for Dad over the past month. We strongly, strongly advise anyone who has yet to have surgery to seriously reconsider the procedure. We encourage you to exhaust any and all non-surgical remedies first.
If you do go ahead with this or any major surgical procedure, you should make sure your estate is in order, including a living will that clearly indicates to your family your wishes for or against life support (medical or advanced directives), a durable power-of-attorney, and an appointed healthcare agent or proxy, in the event of unforeseen complications.
Hopefully you will not have to utilize any of these legal instruments, however it is best to be prepared.
Best wishes to all.
