August 19,2002
I have been looking forward to this surgery for so long. When a friend at work told me our insurance covered this, I made plans to go for it. I started Jan 18, 2002 with my consultation with Dr. Lane. Unaware of all of the red tape a person is put through, I didn't get my approval for this surgery until last week Friday, August 16, 2002. I am scheduled to have the surgery September 10, 2002. I guess the journey has been worth it so far. I would have had the surgery sooner, but the first doctors I saw were not very good.
My insurance requires a report from an endocrynologist. The first endo doctor did not agree with WLS. He told me he could help me lose weight with his program without having to have surgery. At first, I was interested, but only to find out it was another liquid diet, and a program not covered by my insurance. When I told him I wanted the surgery, he didn't write me a favorable letter-go figure. The psychologist I had wasn't thorough either. Therefore, I had to find new doctors.
I found a endo doctor who was more than willing to not only give me a letter for the surgery, but also help me get my health together in the process.
In the meantime, I became ill with fibromyalgia. I was unable to work. I have been off from work since June 21. I have had very few good days where I have felt "okay". My parents would come and pick up my son and keep him during my sick spells.
I missed an appointment with my psychologist in July and had to wait until August. I "found" this doctor and it seemed as though he was taking me for a ride. However, in the end, he wrote me a wonderful letter, and now I do understand why he wanted to see me several times. It is true, and obvious that he had never reviewed someone for this tpye pf surgery. He had to be very thorough. He is on the Atkins diet. Although he says he wants to see me after sugery, I feel he is interested in knowing more about WLS first hand and is using me and his "research".
I was very frustrated because of the time frame, but now I am very happy. This time has given my parents time to accept my decision to have this surgery and to be supportive. Well, that is all for now, I will post something when I get confirmation of my surgery date.
