Hi everyone, I had my surgery on Monday April 21, 2003 and am now 5 days post-op! I never thought this day would come. I am feeling relatively well - alot better than I expected too. I think I feel so great because I am doing everything (just about everything) I am supposed to be doing, including walking alot and doing the breathing exercises. I was released on Wed April 23 with Pain Meds and have since not needed them anymore. One thing I never thought would be true and that is it is becoming SO hard to get my liquid intake in. I just don't want it, I have no desire and forcing myself to drink every 10-15 minutes is very very hard. The clear protein drink (even though flavored) is hard to tolorate just because I have no interest in having it but I realize I need to have it or I am going to be dehydrated. I also thought smelling my family's meals and seeing food on TV was going to be rough, but again, I have no interest. Let's hope it lasts.
Regarding the surgery, I showed up at the hospital at 9:00am and they called my in for prep about 10ish. I went through the usual questions with a nurse and then saw the anesthesiologist. He started my IV, I dresses in a hospital gown, Norwalk hospital was very accomodating to have nice big and long gowns that didn't make you feel like you didn't "fit in" with the other patients. After that my surgeon Dr. Crum (the best!) came in and relieved me of my fears, we talked a little. My surgered was set for 11:30am - I was wheeled into surgery by 12:10 - they started the anesthesia and within seconds I was out. Next thing I remember was waking up in recovery, my cathetor was in, I was on oxygen and not in much pain. I ended up in recovery for about 5 hours before I was moved to my room because they didn't like my oxygen levels. This was caused by my sever sleep apnea. Once they were comfortable I was moved to my room about 8:30pm. My family was with me alot of the time in recovery, the nurse there Francis Hobbs was GREAT! I had a pretty uneventful night and made sure I asked for pain meds every 3-4 hours like I was entitled to. I didn't want to be in pain, because I was afraid it might hinder my moving around. Throughout the night I was sipping 2tbsp cups of water which they tracked. The next morning I was brought a liquid meal tray with Italian Ice, Gatorade, Jello, Broth and tea. I didnt have anything but water on that time. Later that morning they removed the cathetor (not bad at all) I got out of bed, I was sure to get a dose of pain meds before attempting it, and it went very well. I even went to the bathroom and peed! I decided to stay out of bed and sit in the chair for the day. I took about 5 walks throughout the day down the hallway (this helps pass gas), my stomach was so bloated from the air it was very big and puffy.
The walking help losen it and I burped but didnt pass any air rectally (farted people) until I was home. 99% of the nurses that treated me were great, especially Nurse Maryann Erickson in Norwalk Hospital.
Follow orders, clear your lungs, blow in your tri-ball machine thingy as directed and keep your liquids going! Since I have been home my bowels are moving and the air is flowing! My incisions look great and I am showering each day so that the soapy water runs over them. One thing I encountered unfortunately was that I had a allergic reaction to the nylon tape they had covering them and have blisters on my stomach, hey, I will live! no biggy. I am sleeping well at night, takes a litte bit to get comfy but I am now laying on my sides without much pain. Anyone with questions please feel free to email me anytime!
