Cyndi: Thank you and all the others for your kind notes, thoughts and prayers - - - (I'm having my wife Jane write this for me while I'm up at the hospital - she's better at it; actually she's home with a really bad cold). It's been such a very long ordeal; I will try to give you a condensed version and, I'll be sure to tell Diane's mom, Carol that you were asking again. We've been up in ICU every day -sometimes twice a day. It's been almost a month now since she first was admitted to ICU
Diane's fifth (and last) surgery was on Nov. 15th; they re-attached the bowels, stomach bypass, cleaner her out, etc. but had to leave her open as the swelling from the incisions in her abdominal area were too swollen to close; they inserted a mesh reinforcement which will dissolve as she heals - it's still pretty much open on her stomach. They'll pull the skin over after it's healed - she may also have to have a skin graft.
Diane's had 10-hour daily dialysis almost every day since the 15th; she's been handling that pretty well and they managed to remove I think about 40 liters of fluid - that's a lot !!!
She had a few rough days where her skin was weeping and water blistering, etc. due to all the excess fluid; and last weekend there was major concern about her liver not functioning. Her white cell count was up and she had a fever but Yesterday she had a catscan/mri done - which showed no infection in her colon (very good sign); the levels on her liver are going down which is another good sign; they took her off her blood pressure meds today and she's been doing OK so far. Her skin (legs, arms, etc.) is much better; she is tolerating them moving her for longer periods of time, to change the dressings on her back - bedsores - which they are closely watching.
So, yesterday (Dec. 3rd) was a good day for Diane. Although she is still in a "coma-state" and not awake, she does respond when the nurses come in to clean her mouth - she will open it when asked and she has moved her eyes back and forth (you can see her eyes moving under her lids). Per the doctor suggestion, Bob brought up a walkman and they have her wear that during the day - it's more for hearing the day, date, time, events - rather than the music/songs. Because of her trauma, pain, etc., we were told it will be awhile yet before she will be fully waken. We're praying and keeping our fingers crossed that she continues doing better and better each day.
You can cut/paste/copy this how you want and share with others (post on her web-page card or send e-mails). . . . can't wait for Diane to come home and be able to read all the notes from everyone. (haven't had too much time to check the website on Diane since around Thanksgiving. Will try to give you another update soon.
