At five years out (can it be?), I can say that I have never been sorry that I underwent the weight loss surgery. Due to being in grad school in an online environment, I gained 20 pounds over the last two years, but am joining a gym next month. I have already reduced my portion sizes and trying to get more fluids in, and it seems to be working!

It's now been a year since my panni surgery. The results are satisfying and while I continue to struggle with body image, my weight is pretty stable at 220-240 all year round, depending on those "women" kinda things! (Sorry, guys!) I am glad to report that I have no recurring medical problems and that I keep up with my medical and blood test appointments on a regular schedule. I have nothing much in the way of medical experience to share, so I don't post much, but feel free to drop me an email!

Well, I am the size I should be from now on. I am at 215-217 and I feel SO good! Since the plastic surgery, it feels great not to kick skin around all of the time. I really feel like a whole new woman!

I had my panniculectomy on May 22 and did again have a compliation requiring a blood transfusion. The panni surgery was much more painful than I expected, but I sure was surprised at how FAST I felt better afterwards. It's been 7 weeks and I feel great! I now weigh around 220 pounds and am thrilled to have the 20+ pounds of skin gone. I don't even miss my bellybutton! ;-)

I have been approved for a panniculectomy and will be having that and a hernia repair on May 23rd at Vanderbilt.
The info below is my progression through the surgery process starting in 2000. The date of THIS writing is July 20 2002. I have lost from 427 (my all time high) down to 240 and am maintaining this weight. My marriage has ended, but he is still one of my biggest cheerleaders! Nothing in my life is the same as before and I am very thankful for the opportunity to LIVE! :)
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been grossly obese since toddlerhood. My parents even took me to Vanderbilt when I was 5 to see if anyone could help. At that time I was 101 pounds. I am 29 now and weigh 406 pounds.
I have a bachelor's degree and am a 4th grade teacher and I love my life and my job, but feel like my life is on total hold because of my enormous size and because it is getting harder for me to do the things I really enjoy.
Update: Went to see Dr. Wright on Friday, June 9 and also attended the support group meeting. Everything went very well and all my questions were answered and everyone worked hard at making me feel welcome and at ease.
I already lost 13 pounds, just imagining what it will be like to eat after surgery.
UPDATE: June 23, 2000 I have been approved! Looks like my date will be in August.
June 30, 2000--I am scheduled to have surgery on Aug. 7 at Vanderbuilt University Medical Center.

Pre-op tests are behind me. Much less to this day than I had feared! Counting the days to the 27th!!! Ooops...gained four pounds!
August 31st, 2000
So far I have lost over forty pounds and am back at work. Teaching is wonderful and even though I am worn out at the end of the day, it feels great to be out of the house.
There isn't a day that goes by when someone doesn't mention my weight loss and I am glad to report that the eating is going very well.

I have been amazed at how the weight continues to drop and at the energy that I have! It is amazing. I now weigh about 257 pounds and am amazed at this new life! I rarely have problems with food. I do have to constantly remind myself to drink enough water and that I CAN move now. I actually enjoy exercise! But I am still in "sloth" mode, sometimes and have to work hard at remembering to move, move, move!
